B1601 — Ford PATS received invalid format of key code
Universal diagnostic code. Below: what it means, common causes, symptoms, and the exact bench-programming fix path.
Common causes
- •PATS receiver ring around ignition cylinder failing
- •Transponder chip in key damaged
- •Aftermarket alarm interference
- •Failed dealer key-programming left PATS table corrupted
- •Used PCM installed with mismatched PATS table
Symptoms you'll see
- •Cranks normally, no fuel pulse / no spark
- •THEFT light flashing on dashboard
- •Engine starts for 1-2 seconds then dies
- •Same code with multiple keys
The fix path
Diagnose the PATS receiver first (continuity + 12V at the receiver connector). If receiver checks out, options are: (1) replace receiver + reprogram keys at dealer, or (2) PATS Delete service ($199) that disables PATS at the PCM level entirely.
