BMW E90 / E92 / E93 Lights Stopped Working — FRM Diagnosis

When all lights die at once on a 3-Series, the FRM is almost always the culprit.

Symptoms — does this match what you're seeing?

  • Headlights, tail lights, AND turn signals all stopped working at once
  • Brake lights either dead or stuck on permanently
  • Power windows non-functional
  • Wipers don't respond to stalk inputs
  • Sometimes preceded by a battery replacement or jump-start

What causes this

  • FRM Footwell Module failure (most common — controls all exterior lighting on E9x)
  • Specifically, FRM3 EEPROM corruption from a battery event
  • ~95% chance it's the FRM if multiple unrelated lighting circuits died simultaneously

If you have an E90, E91, E92, or E93 (BMW 3-Series 2006-2013) and multiple lighting circuits stopped working at the same time, you're almost certainly looking at an FRM failure. The Footwell Module controls all exterior lighting, power windows, wipers, and interior comfort lights on the E9x platform — when it bricks, you lose all of those at once.

The diagnostic pattern is unmistakable: yesterday everything worked, today nothing does. There's usually a triggering event — a battery replacement, a jump-start, a coding attempt — but sometimes the FRM just dies from accumulated voltage stress over the years.

What to do: pull the FRM (driver's side footwell, behind a plastic cover). Ship it to AML at 1168 W Pioneer Parkway, Arlington TX 76013. We bench-recover the EEPROM, restore the firmware, ship it back within 24 hours. You reinstall — lights, windows, wipers, comfort lights all come back. No further coding session needed.

$175 flat — vs dealer quotes typically running $900-1,100 for a replacement FRM plus coding labor.

This is one of our highest-volume services. We see at least 4-5 E90/E92 FRM3 bricks per week.
