BMW CAS Repair — Bricked During an ISTA Update or Key Programming (CAS1–CAS4+ Data Recovery)
BMW dead, no dash or key after a failed ISTA update or key-programming flash? Ship just the bricked CAS — we rewrite its firmware and restore your car's data, or program a replacement CAS if yours can't be saved.
F20/F30-family or newer car with a FEM or BDC? FEM/BDC bricked-module recovery
Sending several modules? Add them all — one box, one return-shipping charge.

CAS1, CAS2, CAS3, CAS3+, CAS4 and CAS4+ on E- and F-series BMW (E60/E61, E63/E64, E65/E66, E70/E71, E8x, E9x, F01/F02, F07, F10/F11, F12/F13, F25 and more) and R-series MINI, bricked by a failed update, flash or key-programming session. Text your VIN and a photo of the CAS label first.
BMW CAS Bricked-Module Recovery: the short answer
BMW CAS bricked-module recovery is a mail-in bench repair for a Car Access System (CAS1, CAS2, CAS3, CAS3+, CAS4 or CAS4+) left dead by a failed ISTA update, J2534 pass-thru flash or key-programming session on E- and F-series BMW and R-series MINI models. Auto Module Lab reads the module's memory directly, rewrites the firmware and restores the car's own VIN, key data, ISN and mileage, so the original CAS and keys work again. $350 flat at our Arlington, Texas bench, typical 24-hour turnaround, shipped back to any US address.
How It Works
Three simple steps. Hundreds of mail-in jobs completed for shops, locksmiths, and DIY pros.

Pay & Get Address
Click "Order Now", pay securely online. We email shipping address + instructions within minutes.

Ship Your Module
Pack per the instructions and ship to Arlington. USPS goes to our PO Box; UPS and FedEx must use the street address. Your prepaid inbound label arrives by email — shipping to us costs you nothing.

Get It Back Fast
Work typically completed within 24 hours of receipt. Ships back next business day at the return speed you chose at checkout — standard to overnight. Tracking emailed.
What You Get
- Bench check of what the failed session damaged — the program, the stored data, or both
- Firmware rewritten and your original data written back — VIN, key data, ISN, mileage and vehicle order
- If your data cannot be recovered: a replacement CAS you supply, programmed to your car with the ISN from your DME
- Existing keys keep working after a successful restore — no all-keys-lost job
- No donor CAS needed for the recovery itself
- Typical 24-hour bench turnaround after the module arrives
- Return shipping your choice at checkout — standard, 2-day, or overnight
- You are never charged for a repair we cannot deliver
Compatibility
Confirm your part matches one of the variants below before ordering. Not sure? Text us a photo and we'll verify.
Every CAS carries a label with its part number. Text us a clear photo of it with your VIN and we confirm coverage before you ship — free, and it takes minutes. Tell us what was running when the car died and what ISTA or your tool reported: a dead CAS fits a car with no key recognition and no dash, but a full-vehicle update programs several modules, and we would rather sort that out before you pay to ship anything.
CAS generations
- CAS1 (E65/E66 7 Series)
- CAS2 / CAS3 / CAS3+ (E60/E61, E63/E64, E70/E71, E8x, E9x, E84, E89)
- CAS4 / CAS4+ (F01/F02, F07, F10/F11, F06/F12/F13, F25/F26)
- MINI R55–R61 with a CAS
Typical cause
- ISTA (ISTA/P or ISTA+) update that stopped partway
- J2534 pass-thru or ICOM lost the connection mid-flash
- Battery voltage dropped during programming (no charger on the car)
- Key-programming tool (Autel, VVDI, CGDI and similar) failed during a CAS flash or downgrade
Outcomes
- Your own CAS restored with its original data
- Or a replacement CAS you supply, programmed to the car (DME needed)
- Existing keys keep working after a successful restore
Will This Fix My Problem?
Honest answer: here's exactly what this service fixes — and what it doesn't.
Fixes:
- Car went completely dead during or right after a CAS update in ISTA (ISTA/P or ISTA+)
- Programming ended with a CAS error — now no dash, no chime, no key or remote response, no crank
- Only the interior lights still come on; nothing else powers up and the key is not recognized
- CAS no longer answers ISTA or your scan tool after a flash or key-programming attempt
- A key-programming tool (Autel, VVDI, CGDI and similar) bricked the CAS mid-flash or during a downgrade
- Locksmith and shop rescue jobs — handled discreetly
Won't fix:
- A healthy CAS that only needs a key added — that is our BMW CAS key programming service
- Moving your data onto a different, working CAS — that is our BMW CAS clone service
- 2013+ F-chassis cars with a FEM/BDC — see our FEM/BDC bricked-module recovery
- Pre-CAS EWS-era BMWs (E38/E39/E46/E53) — see our EWS services
- Water, fire or physical damage to the CAS microcontroller itself (assessed case by case)
- A no-start caused by the battery, fuel, spark, wiring or the DME itself
Before you order
You diagnose, we service the module.
We don't have your car and we don't diagnose it. Order once you or your mechanic have confirmed this module is the cause. If the work is completed and the car still has the same symptom because of another fault, the work is still done — a bench re-test under warranty is free.
A clone copies what is in your module.
We transfer the data as we read it. If another shop or tool already worked on the module — an unfinished clone, a tune, a delete — that data can come across too. Tell us before you ship.
What "plug-and-play" means.
No dealer programming should be needed when your original data is intact, the donor matches your module (same type, hardware and software family) and the rest of the car works. It isn't a promise that the car will start or run.
Our bench process
What happens between your module arriving and it going back in the box.
- 1
Intake and identification
Intake and identification
Your CAS is logged against your order and photographed as received. We confirm the generation and part number from the label and note what was running when it failed — ISTA, a pass-thru or a key tool — because that tells us where to look first.
- 2
Direct memory read
Direct memory read
A bricked CAS cannot talk on the car's network, so we read its microcontroller directly on the bench and save a full copy of what is there before anything is written.
- 3
Damage assessment
Damage assessment
We check what the failed session damaged — the program the CAS runs, the area that stores your VIN, key data, ISN and mileage, or both — and tell you which path we are on before going further.
- 4
Firmware rewrite and data restore
Firmware rewrite and data restore
The firmware is rewritten and your original data written back, so the CAS is your car's own module again rather than a blank one.
- 5
Plan B if the data is gone
Plan B if the data is gone
If your data cannot be recovered, we program the replacement CAS you supplied to your car instead, using the ISN read from your DME, set to your car's true mileage, with the keys you sent programmed to it.
- 6
Bench check and return
Bench check and return
The CAS is powered and checked for normal communication on the bench before it is signed off. It ships back with tracking at the return speed you chose at checkout.
Repair vs used vs replacement
Four ways out of this failure, compared honestly.
| Path | What it involves | Your keys | Main catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recover your CAS (this service) | Ship the bricked CAS alone. The firmware is rewritten and your own data restored on the bench, for one flat price. | Keep working after a successful restore. | Not every CAS can be saved — then plan B, at the same flat price. |
| Clone onto a donor CAS | Your data copied onto a matching used CAS. Needs a donor, and your original's memory must still be readable. | Keep working. | You find and buy a matching donor first, and it only works when your original can be read. |
| Used CAS programmed to the car | A used unit renewed and programmed with your car's ISN, VIN and mileage. | Have to be programmed to the replacement. | More parts and steps, and any spare key you did not send needs adding later. |
| New CAS through a dealer | A new part plus dealer programming to your VIN, usually after a tow. | Depends on the dealer's process — ask them. | The highest-cost path, and the dealer's schedule sets your downtime. |

We do not publish dealer or used-part prices — they vary by region and change often, and a made-up number would be worse than none. Ask your dealer for a current quote and compare it with the flat price above.
Car dead after a CAS update? Read this before you try again.
If ISTA can still see the CAS, re-running the programming with a battery charger connected sometimes completes it — that is worth one careful try. If the CAS no longer answers ISTA or your tool at all, more attempts are unlikely to bring it back, and some tools' retries overwrite the very data we need to restore it. If your tool saved a backup of the CAS before it failed (many key-programming tools do), email it to us with your order number — it makes a full restore more likely. Shops and locksmiths: rescue jobs are a big part of our work, and we handle them discreetly.
Shipping Instructions
These details are also emailed to you the moment your payment clears.
Verify first: text us your VIN and a photo of the CAS label — we confirm coverage before you ship. Stop further programming attempts.
