Pull the upper and lower column shrouds, unplug its connector, and it comes off as one piece — the ring is part of it. The ignition lock itself stays in the vehicle.
Why can't you just use my VIN?
Because the four-digit PIN and the key list are stored in the SKIM itself. On the 1998-2004 vehicles the PIN is never sent on the data bus, so no scan tool can read it through the OBD port — the dealer needs the vehicle and a code lookup that often no longer exists for a car this old. Reading the module directly on the bench is the only way around that, and it is what this service does.
