Why does my used GM ECM crank but not start?
Because the used module still carries the donor vehicle's VIN and anti-theft data — it doesn't belong to your car, so the security system blocks the start and you get a "theft" light. Cloning your original module's identity onto that unit makes it belong to your vehicle, and the no-start clears. It has to be a match for the controller family and part number, and your original has to be readable.
