On a 996 or 986 the alarm box and the DME are married — plan for both

The 996 and 986 immobilizer is a two-module relationship: the alarm and immobilizer control unit authorises the key, and the DME only runs when it recognises that authorisation. Replace one with a unit from another car and the pair no longer agree, which is why swapping a used alarm box or a used DME lands you in the same cranks-but-never-fires no-start. If you are replacing both, or do not yet know which failed, say so when you contact us — we scope the alarm box and the engine ECU together rather than have you ship twice. Proof of ownership is required.

What exactly is the alarm box, and why does it stop my car starting?
It is the alarm and immobilizer control unit fitted to the 996-generation 911 and the 986 Boxster, roughly 1998-2004. On those cars it is the immobilizer authority: it recognises the transponder in your key and authorises the engine control unit to run. If it fails, or if you fit one from another car, the vehicle sees an unauthorised key even when the key itself is perfect, and you get a crank with no start.
I have lost all keys to my 996. Where does that job start?
At the alarm box, because that is where the key data lives on these cars. That is different from most modern Porsches, where keys are handled by the body control module or Kessy system. Mail us the alarm module and the VIN with proof of ownership and we work from the module's own data on the bench. Tell us up front that it is an all-keys-lost job so a technician can scope what else, if anything, needs to come with it.
Will my existing keys still work after a clone?
Yes — that is the point of cloning. We copy the immobilizer and key data from your original onto the matched donor, so the replacement carries the same key authorisations your car already knows. You should not need new keys on a successful clone. If your original cannot be read, that changes the plan and we tell you before any charge.
Mine got wet. Is the data gone?
Not necessarily. Water intrusion is a well-known problem on these cars, and the alarm module sits low enough to be an early casualty of a blocked drain or a soaked carpet. If the board still reads, we clone it before corrosion progresses further — that is the whole argument for doing it now rather than after the next rain. If it is far enough gone that nothing reads, we say so, and the job routes to our ECU advanced recovery service instead of a clone.
Do you supply the donor unit?
No — you source a used donor from eBay, a salvage yard, or a Porsche parts recycler, and we verify compatibility before you buy or ship. Match the Porsche part number on the label as closely as possible; early and late 986 units differ, and the label decides rather than the model year. Send us the listing photos plus your VIN and a technician confirms the pair at no charge.
Should I send the engine ECU too?
Often, yes. On the 996 and 986 the alarm box and the DME are married to each other, so a car that has had one of them replaced with a second-hand unit will not start until they agree again. If you have swapped either module, or you are not certain which one failed, tell us — our Porsche DME / engine ECU clone service covers the engine side and the two are frequently ordered together so you only ship once.
My Porsche is a 2005 or newer — does this apply?
No. From 2005 onward Porsche moved to a different immobilizer architecture, and the 997, 987, Cayenne, and Panamera are covered by our other Porsche services, including Porsche BCM / Kessy key programming and Porsche BCM clone.
