Smart Fortwo ECU Cloning — Mail-In Bench Service for Used-ECU Installs (451 / 450)
Dropped a used ECU into your Smart Fortwo and now it cranks but won't start? Mail in your original plus a matching donor and we clone the immobilizer and VIN data across on the bench, so the second-hand unit runs your car.
Sending several modules? Add them all — one box, one return-shipping charge.
Smart Fortwo 451 (2008–2015, Mitsubishi 1.0L, Bosch ECU) and earlier 450 — engine ECU cloning, plus the automated-manual TCU and SAM/BCM where supported. Verified by VIN + ECU part label before you ship.

Will This Fix My Problem?
Honest answer: here's exactly what this service fixes — and what it doesn't.
Fixes:
- ✓Used Smart Fortwo ECU installed and the car cranks but will not start
- ✓Original engine ECU failed and a replacement is quoted at dealer prices
- ✓Immobilizer / drive-authorization fault after an ECU swap
- ✓No communication with the engine ECU and you have a donor ready to program
- ✓ECU damaged by water or corrosion but still powers up — clone it before it dies
- ✓You need a second-hand ECU made plug-and-play for your exact Smart
Won't fix:
- ✗Does not include the donor ECU — you source a matching used unit (we verify the part number first)
- ✗Does not clone an original ECU that is internally dead or unreadable — there is no data to copy
- ✗Does not guarantee a clone alone is plug-and-play where the ECU is tied to the ignition switch — a technician confirms whether the ignition/key must ship in too
- ✗Does not remove or bypass the factory immobilizer — drive authorization stays intact
- ✗Does not fix a no-start caused by fuel, spark, sensors, wiring, or a dead battery
- ✗Does not repair mechanical engine, clutch-actuator, or transmission damage
- ✗Does not bypass proof of ownership
Second-hand Smart ECU? It won't start the car until it's cloned
The Smart Fortwo engine ECU carries immobilizer and VIN data locked to the car it came from, so a used unit from another Smart cranks yours but never fires. The dealer answer is a new ECU at prices that make no sense on a car this size. The bench answer is this service: if your original still powers up and responds, we copy its complete immobilizer and VIN identity onto the donor so the car can't tell the difference. Smart is Mercedes-owned but runs its own architecture, so this is a distinct service from big-Mercedes FBS coding. On some 451 systems the ECU is married to the ignition switch — a technician tells you before you ship whether a clone alone is enough or whether the ignition and a working key need to come too. Proof of ownership is required for any immobilizer-related work.
Shipping Instructions
These details are also emailed to you the moment your payment clears.
Verify first: text or email us your VIN plus photos of your original ECU label and the donor's label — a technician confirms the part numbers are a compatible match and whether the ignition/key must ship in too, before you ship anything. Then send both units (original + donor) to PO Box 120241, Arlington TX 76012 if you ship USPS — or 1009 Oakwood Ln # 120241, Arlington TX 76012 if you ship UPS or FedEx (UPS and FedEx cannot deliver to a PO Box). We clone on the bench, test communication, and ship everything back via the return option you pick at checkout (Standard $24.95, UPS 2-Day $54.95, or UPS overnight $94.95).
What to include in your box
- Your original Smart Fortwo ECU (if it powers up — this is the clone path) AND the matching donor ECU
- The TCU (gearbox actuator) or SAM/BCM too, if you want those cloned
- Year, make, model, and engine (e.g. 2013 Smart Fortwo 451 1.0L)
- VIN of the vehicle
- The part number off BOTH ECU labels (we pre-verify the match)
- What is wrong now: original dead, cranks-no-start after swap, water damage, etc.
- Proof of ownership (title, registration, or bill of sale)
- Your name, return address, and phone number
