The 722.9 — Mercedes 7G-Tronic — is a well-built gearbox with one very well-known electrical weak point. What the conductor plate actually is
The conductor plate is not a computer in the sense of a dash-mounted control unit, and it is not simply a wiring harness. It is the electro-hydraulic controller assembly that lives inside the transmission pan, bolted to the valve body and submerged in fluid, and it does three jobs at once:
- It carries the speed sensors. The 722.9 uses internal speed sensors that report input, output and intermediate shaft speeds. The transmission control logic uses those signals continuously to decide when to shift, how much to overlap the clutches, and whether the shift it commanded actually happened. Lose one of those signals and the controller loses the ability to verify its own work.
- It carries the solenoid connections. The shift and pressure-regulating solenoids that operate the valve body connect through the plate. Every hydraulic command the transmission executes passes through this electrical layer.
- It carries the internal wiring out to the 13-pin connector. That connector is the electrical bulkhead where the inside of the transmission meets the outside world — and it is the single most notorious failure point on the whole assembly.
On many 722.9 applications the transmission control electronics are integrated with the plate assembly rather than sitting in a separate box, which is exactly why a "conductor plate" job carries programming implications. It is not a dumb part. It holds adaptation and identity data, and that is the reason it cannot simply be bought used and bolted in.
The classic failure signatures
Here is what a failing plate actually does, ranked roughly by how often we see each complaint.
Limp mode locked in one gear
The most common presentation. The transmission control logic detects a signal it cannot trust — usually a speed-sensor circuit — and does the safe thing: it stops shifting and holds a single gear, typically second or third, so the vehicle can be driven off the road. The car still drives. It just will not shift.
The tell that points at the plate rather than at something mechanical is that limp mode arrives without a mechanical event. No bang, no flare, no burnt smell, no slipping that got progressively worse. It was fine, and then it was in limp mode. Electrical faults arrive suddenly; mechanical wear arrives gradually.
No reverse, or delayed reverse
Reverse relies on a specific clutch and brake combination, and losing the solenoid control that applies it produces a very clean symptom: forward gears work, reverse does not. Owners describe selecting R, hearing nothing, then having the car eventually engage with a thump — or never engage at all. When forward drive is normal and only reverse is affected, the odds shift strongly toward the control side rather than toward a worn-out gearbox.
Harsh or flaring 2-3 shift
Flaring is engine speed rising during a shift because clutch overlap went wrong. On a control-side fault, that happens because the controller has lost the speed feedback it needs to time the overlap correctly, or because a pressure-regulating solenoid is not being driven properly. A harsh, banging 2-3 shift usually means line pressure is being commanded high as a protective default — which is what the control logic does when it does not trust its own data.
Will not move at all
The worst presentation, and the one most likely to be misdiagnosed as a dead transmission. When the plate's electrical path is compromised badly enough — commonly by fluid contamination at the connector — the controller can end up unable to command any engagement. The gearbox is mechanically fine. It is simply not receiving instructions.
Intermittent faults that come and go with temperature
Cracked joints, fluid-contaminated pins and marginal sensor circuits all behave differently hot and cold. A fault that appears after twenty minutes of driving and clears overnight is a strong electrical signature. Wear does not go away when the car cools down.
The 13-pin connector leak — the failure everybody eventually meets

The 13-pin connector is where the internal wiring exits the transmission case. Its sealing sleeve and adapter are a known weak point, and when they fail, transmission fluid does not just drip onto the ground — it wicks up the wiring harness by capillary action, travelling inside the loom, away from the transmission, toward the electrical connections at the other end.
That produces a failure pattern that confuses people badly:
- A transmission fluid leak that shows up at the connector rather than at the pan gasket
- Fluid found inside a connector body some distance from the gearbox
- Electrical faults appearing at the control-side end of the harness — including the ESP and control-unit connections that share the area — because contaminated pins corrode and lose contact
- Multiple, seemingly unrelated fault codes stored across different systems
So: a "transmission" complaint on a 722.9 can end up presenting as a stability-control or control-unit fault, because the fluid physically travelled there. When you find fluid in a connector that has no business containing fluid, stop looking for a second fault. You have found the first one.
The correct repair addresses both ends — the sleeve and adapter that leaked, and any harness or connector the fluid reached. Replacing the plate while leaving a fluid-soaked loom in place is how a repaired car comes back.

Four other problems produce overlapping symptoms. Rule them out before you commit to a plate.
Fluid level — and why the check is temperature-dependent
This is the single most common false diagnosis on the 722.9, because checking the fluid level correctly requires the fluid to be within a specified temperature range. The level in the pan changes measurably as the fluid expands with heat. Check it cold and it reads low; check it too hot and it reads high. Either wrong reading sends a technician down a wrong path — adding fluid that was never missing, or condemning a transmission that was simply cold.
A genuinely low level produces slipping, delayed engagement and shift quality complaints that look exactly like a control fault. A genuinely overfilled transmission aerates the fluid and produces the same complaints from the opposite direction. Valve body
A mechanically stuck valve or worn bore produces gear-specific symptoms too — but the pattern differs. Valve-body problems tend to arrive gradually, worsen with heat and mileage, and frequently show up as a slip or flare that got progressively worse over weeks. They are less likely to produce clean electrical circuit codes, and far less likely to arrive suddenly on an otherwise healthy car.
Torque converter
Lock-up shudder, a vibration at a steady cruise, or a stall-like judder under light throttle points at the converter rather than at the plate. Converter complaints are usually described in terms of feel — shudder, vibration, buzzing — while plate complaints are described in terms of behaviour: it will not shift, it will not reverse, it went into limp mode.
The transmission control side and its adaptations
Some complaints are neither the plate nor the hydraulics but the control and adaptation layer — the transmission has learned bad adaptation values, or a control-unit-level fault is producing the same symptom set.
