Radio & HMI VIN Swap — Marry a Used Module Remotely, $150
The $80 radio that almost worked
It is the most tempting arbitrage in the used-parts world: the radio that lists for four figures at the dealer sits in a salvage listing for $80. It arrives, it fits, it powers up — and the car treats it like a stranger, because it is one. Infotainment modules, HMI screens and clusters are married to a VIN, and a donor unit announces the donor everywhere it matters: theft-locked features, configuration mismatches, U-codes, or a boot screen that never finishes.
The dealer's answer is a programming appointment. Ours is the same operation without the trip: a remote VIN swap — writing your vehicle's VIN and configuration into the module so it stops being somebody else's part.
How the $150 flat session works
Book on the VIN-swap page — one price, any supported make, because the job is the same shape everywhere:
- Install the donor module in your car (bench-powered setups can work too — say so on the form)
- Connect your J2534 and Windows laptop, battery maintainer on
- We open the session, reach the module through the OE software, and write your VIN and configuration
- Verify: features live, codes cleared, marriage complete
The standard remote checklist applies, and if you don't own an interface yet, the kits exist for exactly this first job — the session even rides the same checkout.
The honest limits of a swap
Support varies by make, module and security scheme, and some modules refuse over-OBD persuasion entirely — certain theft-locked units and certain brands' component-protection schemes need more than a session can offer. Two promises hold regardless: we tell you before the session when your module is one of those, and the session refunds if the supported procedure can't be completed. When the answer is "this one needs the bench," that path exists too — it is the other half of the shop.
Frequently asked questions
Which makes can you VIN-swap? Any make the OE software supports for the operation — domestic and import both. The booking form takes your VIN and the module's origin, and we confirm supportability before the session.
Does the module need to be in the car? Installed in the car is the normal path. Bench-powered arrangements sometimes work for specific modules — describe your setup on the form and we'll say.
Will it clear the anti-theft lock on my donor radio? Where the platform's supported procedure resolves it, yes — that is often the whole point of the swap. Where a brand locks the operation beyond OBD reach, we say so up front.
Cluster mileage — can you change it? We marry modules to vehicles; we do not offer odometer alteration. A donor cluster's mileage handling follows the platform's supported procedure, and legality is not negotiable.
Is $150 really flat? Flat for the supported swap, any make. If your job turns out to need bench work instead, that quotes separately — before anything is charged.
