Before you condemn the module

Work this list in order. Every step here is cheaper than a module repair — and skipping them is how healthy modules get shipped.

    Load-test the battery and check charging voltage

    The one honest external cause. 12.4 V+ engine-off, 13.5 V+ running, and have the battery load-tested — a battery can show surface voltage and still sag under the pump’s draw.

    Check the ABS fuses and swap-test the relay

    The pump feed usually runs through a high-amp fuse. Verify it, and swap the ABS relay with an identical neighbor — a two-minute test that eliminates the most commonly guessed part.

    Inspect and clean the power and ground path

    Follow the heavy feed to the module and the ground to chassis. Corrosion at either end drops real voltage under load. Clean, tighten, re-test.

    Measure at the module connector, loaded

    Back-probe the supply at the module with the pump commanded (bidirectional scan tool) or at key-on. Good voltage at the pins plus a persisting C2116 moves the fault inside the module.

    Clear and confirm

    With the external path verified, a returning C2116 — especially with C2200 or a silent key-on self-test — is the EBCM. Ship the electronic module.

The fix path

ABS Module Repair ($325) — bench repair of the EBCM. Verify battery voltage, the ABS fuse, relay, and the module’s power and ground pins first; if all are good and C2116 stays, the module is the fault.

The code that lies about where the problem is

C2116 reads like a wiring code — “pump motor supply voltage low” sounds like a job for a multimeter and a new relay. Sometimes it is, and that is why the rule-out flow below is genuinely load-bearing on this code: real voltage problems at the pump feed do set it, and they cost almost nothing to fix.

But on Ram trucks and Jeeps of the 2009-2018 era there is a well-worn second story: every external measurement checks out — battery strong, fuses intact, relay clicking, solid voltage at the module connector — and C2116 stays. That pattern means the measurement is failing inside the module. The EBCM’s own supply-monitoring or pump-driver stage has degraded, so the module reports low voltage it is actually causing, or failing to read. External parts-swapping cannot reach that fault; board-level repair can.

The pump circuit is the highest-current path in the module, which is why its stage fails first: more current means more heat, and more heat means faster solder fatigue on exactly those joints. It is the same aging mechanism behind C2200 — the two codes are neighbors on the same board, which is why they so often appear together.

Listen for the self-test

These trucks give you a free diagnostic every morning: at key-on or first pull-away, the ABS runs a brief self-test and the pump gives a short audible whir. Owners usually stop hearing it before the light comes on. If your pump has gone silent at key-on and C2116 is stored despite good measured voltage, that is the internal failure pattern — the drive stage cannot spin the motor even though the truck is supplying it faithfully.

C2116 — frequently asked

I replaced the battery and C2116 is still there. Now what?

You have eliminated the most common external cause — keep going down the list: fuses, relay swap, and voltage measured at the module connector itself. If the module receives good voltage and still logs C2116, the low-voltage reading is being generated internally, and bench repair is the fix.

Why do C2116 and C2200 show up together so often?

They are two symptoms of the same aging board. The pump-supply stage (C2116) and the processor (C2200) live inches apart and suffer the same heat-cycling. Whichever fails first, the other frequently follows — and one board-level repair addresses both.

Does this affect my truck’s regular brakes?

No — the hydraulic system is conventional and the pedal keeps working. You lose the anti-lock and stability functions, which is exactly what you want working when a trailer pushes you into a wet corner. Repair-soon territory.

Will I need to bleed the brakes?
