Honest answer: here's exactly what this service fixes — and what it doesn't.

Fixes:

  • Used or salvage-yard DME installed and the engine cranks but never fires (ISN mismatch)
  • Original DME dead, no-comms, or unreadable by a scan tool and you already have a donor in hand
  • Water-, corrosion-, or heat-damaged DME that still powers up — clone it out before it fails completely
  • Drive-away / immobilizer fault after an engine-computer swap, with the keys themselves known good
  • Replacement DME quoted by the dealer as VIN-locked and coding-required, plus a tow to get there
  • You want your original calibration, VIN, and adaptations carried onto healthy used hardware

Won't fix:

  • Does not include the donor DME — you source a matching used unit and we verify the part number before you buy or ship
  • Does not clone a completely dead or unreadable original — with no source data to copy, that becomes our ECU advanced recovery service (no-comms, burnt, or water-killed units), quoted separately

Why a used BMW DME never just bolts in

A BMW DME is not a bolt-on part. Since the CAS era, the DME stores an ISN that the CAS — or the FEM/BDC on F-chassis cars — checks at every start, so a junkyard DME carries the wrong secret and your engine cranks forever. The dealer path is a new DME ordered against your VIN and coded with ISTA, plus a tow. Cloning is the bench path: your original's ISN, VIN, calibration, and adaptations move onto the donor, your existing keys keep working, and no ISTA session is required at install. MINI is the same job — R50/R52/R53 EMS5150, the R55–R61 Cooper and Countryman DMEs, and the F54–F60 MEVD17.2.3 units all share BMW's architecture and the same handshake, so they run on this listing at the same price. What exactly is the ISN, and why does it stop a used DME from working?
The ISN (Individual Serial Number) is a secret value stored inside the DME and mirrored in the immobilizer master — the CAS module on E-chassis cars, or the FEM/BDC on F-chassis cars. At every start the two compare notes. A donor DME arrives carrying the ISN of the car it came out of, so your CAS or FEM rejects it: the starter turns, fuel and spark are withheld, and the engine cranks indefinitely. Cloning writes your original's ISN onto the donor so the handshake passes exactly as it did before.
Which DME families do you cover?
The older Siemens and Bosch units — MS41, MS42, MS43, MS45, ME7.2, MSV70, MSV80, MSD80, MSD81, MSD85, MSD87, and the MSS controllers from the M cars — plus the modern Bosch MEVD17.2, MEVD17.2.2, and MEVD17.2.3 units used on N20, N55, B46, and B48 engines across the F-chassis 3-, 4-, and 5-Series, X1 F48, and X2 F39. Will my existing keys still work after the clone?
Yes — that is the whole point of cloning rather than deleting. The donor comes back carrying your original's ISN, VIN, and coding, so the immobilizer relationship with your CAS or FEM/BDC is unchanged and every key you already have keeps starting the car. Nothing about the factory security is removed or weakened. If you actually want the immobilizer handshake removed for an off-road or swap build, that is our separate BMW DME EWS delete service, not this one.
Do I need dealer ISTA coding after installing the cloned DME?
No. A clone carries your original's calibration, VIN, coding, and ISN, so the donor is plug-and-play — you install it, turn the key, and the car starts. That is the difference between cloning and ordering a fresh VIN-locked DME from the dealer, which has to be coded with ISTA before the car will run. A few learned values, like idle and fuel trims, relearn on their own during normal driving.
My original DME is completely dead — can you still clone it?
Honest answer: no. Cloning copies data OUT of your original, so if the unit will not power up or respond at all there is nothing to read and no clone is possible. In that case the job changes — it becomes advanced recovery or used-DME programming, where the donor is written with data reconstructed from the vehicle side, sometimes requiring the CAS or FEM and a working key to come in as well. Contact us with your VIN and symptoms before ordering and a technician will tell you which path yours is.
How do I pick a compatible donor DME?
Match the BMW part number on your original's label as closely as you can — same DME family, same hardware and software index is the gold standard. Same year and same engine is not automatically a match, because BMW revised hardware mid-generation. Send us photos of your original's label plus the donor listing before you buy anything and a technician verifies the pair at no charge. We do not supply donors; you source one from a salvage yard, recycler, or online seller.
How is this different from your DME EWS delete and your F-series used-DME programming?
Three different jobs. This service CLONES a readable original onto a donor and keeps the immobilizer fully intact. The BMW DME EWS delete REMOVES the EWS handshake entirely, which is a different outcome for a different use case (engine swaps, stand-alone builds, missing EWS). The F-series used-DME programming service is what you need when there is no readable original to clone from and the donor has to be adapted to the car another way. If you are not sure which one fits, send your VIN and symptoms and we will route you.
