BMW REM Cloning & Data Transfer — Mail-In Bench Rear Electronic Module Service

Tail lights that stay dead after new bulbs, a trunk that will not release, or REM communication faults after water got into the back of your F30 or F32? Mail in your original plus a matched donor and we clone the coding and configuration onto the replacement on the bench so it drops in.

What You Get

  • Your original REM's coding and configuration cloned onto the hardware-matched donor you supply
  • Donor part-number and hardware-index compatibility verified by VIN and module label BEFORE you ship
  • Bench read and verify of both modules before a single byte is written to the donor
  • Bench communication test on a regulated power supply so the donor leaves us talking
  • A straight answer up front if your original is too far gone to read — before you pay, not after
  • Clear written install notes, including anything that still has to be finished at the vehicle
  • Modules returned with tracking — return-shipping speed your choice at checkout

Will This Fix My Problem?

Honest answer: here's exactly what this service fixes — and what it doesn't.

Fixes:

  • Rear tail, brake, or reverse lighting faults that survive new bulbs and good grounds
  • Trunk or tailgate that will not release, will not latch, or reports the wrong state
  • REM communication / no-response faults stored across multiple modules
  • Water got into the rear of the car and the rear electronics went with it
  • A used REM was installed and the car rejects it or behaves incorrectly
  • Dead rear power outlets and rear-body circuits traced to the module, not the wiring

Won't fix:

  • Does not include the donor REM — you source a part-number-matched used unit (we verify it first)
  • Does not clone an original that is completely dead or unreadable — that becomes a different job; see our ECU advanced recovery service
  • Does not repair burnt rear harness, corroded connectors, water-damaged sockets, or bad grounds in the car
  • Does not fix lighting faults caused by bulbs, LED load-resistor conversions, or trailer wiring
  • Does not repair or clone the FRM footwell module — that is the FRONT lighting module and a separate service
  • Does not code the immobilizer, CAS/EWS, or program keys — those are separate BMW services
  • Does not bypass proof of ownership

Water in the trunk killed it — and a junkyard REM will not just plug in

The classic F-chassis REM story starts with a blocked trunk drain or a tired taillight seal. Water pools in the rear, the module corrodes, and rear lighting and trunk function go strange before the REM stops answering entirely. Owners then buy a used REM, plug it in, and find the car still unhappy — because the donor arrives carrying another vehicle's coding and configuration. Bench cloning is what closes that gap: we copy your original's coding onto the matched donor so the replacement behaves like yours always did, without a dealer ISTA session. Fix the leak first, or the new module drowns too.

Shipping Instructions

These details are also emailed to you the moment your payment clears.

Verify first: text or email us your VIN plus clear photos of your original REM's label and the donor's label — a technician confirms the part numbers and hardware index are a compatible match before you ship. Then send both modules (original + donor) to PO Box 120241, Arlington TX 76012 if you ship USPS — or 1009 Oakwood Ln # 120241, Arlington TX 76012 if you ship UPS or FedEx (UPS and FedEx cannot deliver to a PO Box). We clone the coding and configuration on the bench, test communication, and ship both back via the return option you pick at checkout (Standard $24.95, UPS 2-Day $54.95, or UPS overnight $94.95).

What to include in your box

  • Your original REM (the one out of your car) AND the part-number-matched donor REM
  • Year, make, model, and chassis code (e.g. 2015 BMW 328i F30)
  • VIN of the vehicle
  • BMW part number and hardware index off BOTH module labels — we pre-verify the match
  • What is wrong now: rear lighting faults, trunk will not release, REM no-comms, water intrusion, etc.
  • Whether the car has ever had water in the trunk or spare-tire well, and whether the leak is fixed
  • Proof of ownership (title, registration, or bill of sale)
  • Your name, return address, and a good contact number

Frequently Asked

Still have a question? Text us — replies in minutes.

What is the REM on a BMW and where is it?
REM stands for Rear Electronic Module — the F-chassis rear body-control computer. It lives in the back of the car and handles the tail, brake, reverse and rear fog lamp outputs, the trunk or tailgate release and latch, the rear power outlets, and the rear-body switch and sensor circuits, reporting over the body CAN. Because it sits in the rear, it is the module most exposed to trunk water intrusion.
Which BMWs does this cover?
F30 / F31 / F34 3-Series, F32 / F33 / F36 4-Series, F80 M3, and F82 / F83 M4, plus closely related F-chassis vehicles where the part number supports it. Model year alone never decides it — the BMW part number and hardware index on the module label do. Send us your VIN and a photo of the label and we confirm coverage before you ship anything.
Why won't a used REM from another car just work?
Because the REM carries coding and configuration specific to the car it came out of — option content, market variant, and vehicle-specific settings. Bolt in a donor and it still thinks it belongs to the other car, so you get wrong behavior, mismatch faults, or an outright rejection. Cloning copies your original's coding and configuration onto the donor so it behaves exactly as yours did, without a dealer ISTA coding session.
Is the REM the same thing as the FRM footwell module?
No — and this is the single most common mix-up. The FRM (Footwell Module) is the FRONT lighting and footwell computer, a completely different part with its own well-known failure modes. The REM is the REAR module. If your fault is headlights, front turn signals, or a bricked FRM after a coding attempt, you want our BMW FRM footwell module repair instead. Not sure which one you have? Send a photo of the module and we will tell you.
How do I find a compatible donor REM?
Match the BMW part number on your original's label as closely as possible, and check the hardware index too — a same-year, same-model car is not automatically a match. Send us a photo of your label and the donor listing BEFORE you buy and a technician will confirm the pair, at no charge. Buying an unverified donor is the number-one reason these jobs stall.
My original REM is completely dead — can you still clone it?
If it does not power up or respond at all, there is nothing to read, so a clone is not possible from that unit. Do not assume it is dead just because the car ignores it: many modules that look dead in the vehicle read fine on a bench supply, which is exactly why we test before we quote you a dead-end. If it truly cannot be read, we will tell you and point you at our ECU advanced recovery service rather than take your money for an impossible job.
Will this fix my water-damaged rear wiring too?
No. This is bench data transfer on the module itself — it does not repair a corroded rear harness, water-filled connectors, damaged lamp sockets, or bad rear grounds in the car. If the trunk leak is still there, a cloned module will fail the same way the original did. Fix the drain or the taillight seal first, then install the cloned donor.
How much is it and how does the mail-in work?
It is $250 flat, mail-in only. After a technician verifies your VIN and both module labels, you ship the original and the donor to Auto Module Lab in Arlington, TX. We clone the coding and configuration on the bench, test communication on a regulated supply, and ship both modules back with tracking — return speed is your choice at checkout: Standard $24.95, UPS 2-Day $54.95, or UPS overnight $94.95. Proof of ownership is required before work begins.
