Mercedes, Dodge & Freightliner Sprinter + CDI Diesel ECM Cloning — Mail-In Bench Engine Computer Service

Dropped a used engine computer into your Sprinter or CDI Mercedes and now it cranks forever but never fires? The ECM carries the immobilizer relationship with the EIS/SKREEM, so a donor from another van will never start yours until the data is moved across. Mail in your original plus a matched donor and we clone identity, immobilizer, and calibration on the bench.

Best for

Failed original engine ECM being replaced with a used / salvage unitDonor ECM already installed and the van cranks but will not startWater-, corrosion-, or vibration-damaged ECM that still powers up — clone it out before it dies completelyFleet operators keeping a spare programmed ECM on the shelf for a specific vanAvoiding a dealer-only new ECM order plus a tow and a coding sessionRebuilders and shops prepping a second-hand ECM to be plug-and-play

Will This Fix My Problem?

Honest answer: here's exactly what this service fixes — and what it doesn't.

Fixes:

  • Used Sprinter or CDI engine ECM installed and the engine cranks but never fires
  • Original engine computer failed and the dealer quote for a new coded ECM is out of proportion to the van's value
  • No communication with the engine ECM on a scan tool, and you already have a donor unit in hand
  • Immobilizer / start-error behaviour that appeared immediately after an engine-computer swap
  • Corroded or water-damaged ECM that still powers up — cloned out to healthy hardware before it fails completely
  • Salvage-yard ECM that needs your van's identity and calibration written to it so it is plug-and-play

Won't fix:

  • Does NOT include any emissions edit — no DPF, EGR, AdBlue/SCR, or catalyst deletes, on this or any other service. That is a hard company boundary and we will decline the job.
  • Does not include the donor ECM — you source a matching used unit and we verify the part numbers first
  • Does not revive an original that is internally dead or unreadable — a module that will not power up or respond cannot be cloned; that job routes to our ecu-advanced-recovery-service
  • Does not program keys or repair the EIS / SKREEM / WSP — see sprinter-key-programming-akl, sprinter-valet-key, and sprinter-start-error-repair for the key and ignition side
  • Does not fix a no-start caused by fuel supply, injectors, glow plugs, timing, wiring, grounds, or a weak battery
  • Does not remove or bypass the factory immobilizer — drive authorization stays fully intact
  • Does not bypass proof of ownership — immobilizer-related work requires it, no exceptions

Why a used Sprinter ECM cranks but never starts — and where the emissions line is

On every CDI diesel of this era the engine ECU is paired to the vehicle's EIS/SKREEM/WSP through drive authorization. Bolt in a donor from another van and it still carries that van's identity, so yours cranks indefinitely and never fires. Cloning moves your original's identity, immobilizer relationship, and calibration onto the donor so the car cannot tell the difference. One boundary, stated plainly because this is diesel work: we do not perform emissions edits of any kind — no DPF, EGR, AdBlue/SCR, or catalyst deletes. Cloning preserves your factory emissions calibration exactly as it is. Proof of ownership is required, and a technician verifies both labels before you ship.

Shipping Instructions

These details are also emailed to you the moment your payment clears.

Verify first: text or email us your VIN, engine code, and clear photos of your original ECM label and the donor's label — a technician confirms the Bosch and Mercedes/Chrysler part numbers are a compatible match, and tells you whether your original is readable, before you ship. Then send both units to PO Box 120241, Arlington TX 76012 if you ship USPS — or 1009 Oakwood Ln # 120241, Arlington TX 76012 if you ship UPS or FedEx (UPS and FedEx cannot deliver to a PO Box). We clone on the bench, test communication, and ship everything back via the return option you pick at checkout (Standard $24.95, UPS 2-Day $54.95, or UPS overnight $94.95).

What to include in your box

  • Your original CDI engine ECM (even if damaged — if it powers up we can usually read it) AND the matched donor ECM
  • Year, make, model, body style, and engine code (e.g. 2005 Dodge Sprinter 2500, 2.7L OM647)
  • VIN of the vehicle
  • Bosch number AND Mercedes / Chrysler part number off BOTH module labels — we pre-verify the match
  • What is wrong now: original dead, cranks-no-start after a swap, no communication, water damage, etc.
  • Whether the van has already had a donor ECM installed, and what the scan tool reported
  • Proof of ownership (title, registration, or bill of sale) — required for immobilizer-related work
  • Your name, return address, and a contact email or mobile number for updates

Frequently Asked

Still have a question? Text us — replies in minutes.

Why won't a used Sprinter engine computer just work when I plug it in?
Because the engine ECM is paired to the van's EIS/SKREEM/WSP through drive authorization. A donor unit still carries the identity of the van it came out of, so your engine turns over normally but never fires and the scan tool may report an immobilizer or drive-authorization fault. Cloning copies your original's identity, immobilizer relationship, and calibration onto the donor so it behaves exactly like the module that left.
Which controllers and engines does this actually cover?
The Bosch CDI diesel families: CR3.42 on 2003–2006 Dodge, Freightliner, and Mercedes Sprinter T1N 2.7L (OM647 / OM612); CR3.43 on 2005–2006 Mercedes E320 CDI (OM648) and related passenger diesels; earlier CR2.x on 2002–2003 Sprinter 2.7L; and related CDI controllers across OM611, OM612, OM613, OM642, OM646, OM647, and OM648. That spans Sprinter T1N and NCV3/W906, E-Class W211, ML W163/W164, R-Class W251, GL X164, S-Class, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0 CRD. Send your VIN and label photo and we confirm your exact unit before you buy anything.
Do you do DPF, EGR, or AdBlue deletes while you're in there?
No — never, on any service. Emissions edits are a hard boundary for us and we decline those jobs outright, including on diesel work where people most often ask. Cloning preserves your factory emissions calibration byte-for-byte; nothing about the emissions strategy is touched, softened, or disabled. If that is what you are looking for, we are not the right shop.
Do you supply the donor ECM?
No — you source a used donor from a salvage yard, recycler, or online listing, and we verify compatibility before you buy or ship. Match the Bosch number and the Mercedes or Chrysler part number on the label as closely as possible. Send us photos of both labels plus your VIN and a technician confirms the pair will work, at no charge and before any money changes hands.
My original ECM is completely dead — can you still clone it?
If the module will not power up or respond at all, there is nothing to read, and no honest shop can clone it. That job routes to our ecu-advanced-recovery-service, where we attempt a deeper recovery of the data at chip level. Tell us the symptoms up front and we will map the path before you ship anything, rather than discovering it after your module is already in Texas.
Is this the same as your Sprinter key services?
No — this is the ENGINE computer. Keys, all-keys-lost, valet keys, and ignition-switch faults live on the EIS/SKREEM side, which is a different module entirely: see sprinter-key-programming-akl, sprinter-valet-key, and sprinter-start-error-repair. If you are not sure whether your no-start is the engine ECM or the ignition/key side, send us the VIN and what your scan tool reports and we will tell you which service you actually need.
Will my existing keys still work after the clone?
Yes. Cloning keeps the factory immobilizer and drive-authorization system fully intact — the donor simply inherits your original module's identity, so your existing keys keep working exactly as before. This is not an immobilizer delete or a security bypass, and proof of ownership is required before any work begins.
How much is it and how does the mail-in work?
It is $250 flat. After a technician verifies your VIN, engine code, and both module labels, you ship the original plus the donor to Auto Module Lab in Arlington, TX. We clone on the bench, test communication on a regulated supply, and ship everything back with tracking — return speed is your choice at checkout (Standard $24.95, UPS 2-Day $54.95, or UPS overnight $94.95). Inbound shipping to the lab is customer-paid with your choice of carrier.
