Will This Fix My Problem?

Honest answer: here's exactly what this service fixes — and what it doesn't.

Fixes:

  • Used MINI BCM installed and the car cranks but will not start, or will not crank at all
  • Original BCM dead — no central locking, no lights, no wipers, no communication on a scan tool
  • Second-hand BCM fitted and central locking, lighting, or wipers behave randomly
  • Water-damaged or corroded BCM that still responds — cloned out before it fails completely
  • Breaker-yard BCM that needs your car's configuration and immobilizer identity written onto it
  • You want the replacement module ready to work before it ever goes into the car

Won't fix:

  • Does not include the donor BCM — you source a matched used unit and we verify the part number first
  • Does not clone an original that is internally dead or unreadable — that becomes an advanced-recovery job, see ecu-advanced-recovery-service
  • Does not work across BCM variants — an early aluminum-housing unit and a later-revision unit are not interchangeable
  • Does not cut or program keys, and does not replace a failed EWS/immobilizer ring antenna or ignition switch
  • Does not remove or bypass the factory immobilizer — the security chain stays fully intact
  • Does not diagnose or repair body-side wiring, grounds, door harnesses, blown fuses, or a failing battery
  • Does not bypass proof of ownership — immobilizer-linked work requires it, no exceptions

Why a used first-gen MINI BCM never just plugs in

These cars were engineered by BMW, and the body control module inherits BMW's security thinking: the BCM stores the car's configuration and coding and participates in the EWS-derived immobilizer chain, so it is tied to the specific vehicle it left the factory in. Fit a breaker's BCM and it still believes it belongs to that other MINI — the car may refuse to start, refuse to lock, or light the dash. Cloning solves it at the source. We read your original on the bench, back it up, and write its configuration, coding, and immobilizer data onto the matched donor, so your MINI cannot tell the two apart. Proof of ownership is required, and a technician verifies the variant and part number by VIN and label before you ship anything.

Shipping Instructions

These details are also emailed to you the moment your payment clears.

Verify first: text or email us your VIN plus clear photos of your original BCM's label and the donor's label — a technician confirms the variant and part number are a compatible match before you ship or buy anything. Then send both modules to PO Box 120241, Arlington TX 76012 if you ship USPS — or 1009 Oakwood Ln # 120241, Arlington TX 76012 if you ship UPS or FedEx (UPS and FedEx cannot deliver to a PO Box). We back up the original, clone the configuration, coding, and immobilizer data onto the donor, verify the write, bench-test communication, and ship both back via the return option you pick at checkout (Standard $24.95, UPS 2-Day $54.95, or UPS overnight $94.95).

What to include in your box

  • Your original MINI BCM (even if damaged — as long as it powers up we can usually read it) AND the donor BCM
  • Year, model, and body style (e.g. 2004 MINI Cooper S R53 supercharged hatch)
  • VIN of the vehicle
  • The part number off BOTH module labels, plus a photo of each housing so we can confirm the variant
  • What is wrong now: dead BCM, no-start after a used BCM swap, locking/lighting faults, water damage, etc.
  • How many working keys you have and whether the car currently starts at all
  • Proof of ownership (title, registration, or bill of sale)
  • Your name and return address, and an email address or mobile number we can reach you at

Frequently Asked

Still have a question? Text us — replies in minutes.

Which MINIs does this cover?
The first-generation BMW-built cars: the R50 Cooper hatchback from roughly 2001 to 2006, the R52 convertible from roughly 2005 to 2008, and the R53 Cooper S supercharged hatch (including John Cooper Works builds) from roughly 2002 to 2006. Both BCM revisions are covered — the early aluminum-housing unit and the later revision typically found on R52 and late-build cars. Send your VIN and a photo of the module label and we confirm yours before you ship.
Why won't a used MINI BCM just work when I plug it in?
Because the BCM stores the car's configuration and coding and sits inside the immobilizer chain that MINI inherited from BMW's EWS architecture. A breaker-yard module still carries the donor car's identity and configuration, so your MINI rejects it — commonly a crank-no-start, sometimes dead central locking or lighting instead. Cloning writes your original's data onto the donor so the car sees its own module.
Do the two BCM variants matter that much?
Yes, and this is the single most common reason a mail-in job stalls. The early aluminum-housing BCM and the later revision are not interchangeable, and even within a revision the part number on the label has to match. A same-year, same-model donor is not automatically the right one. Photograph both labels and both housings and send them with your VIN — we confirm the pair for free before you buy or ship.
My original BCM is completely dead. Can you still help?
If it will not power up or respond on the bench there is nothing to read, so a straight clone is off the table. Those jobs route to our advanced recovery service (ecu-advanced-recovery-service), where we attempt a direct memory read from the board itself. Contact us with the VIN and symptoms first and we will tell you honestly whether it is worth attempting before you spend money on shipping.
Do you supply the donor module?
No — you source the used donor from eBay, a breaker, or a parts recycler, and we verify compatibility before you commit. That keeps your cost down and keeps us honest about what will actually work. Send the listing photos and the part number alongside your original's label and we will confirm or reject the match at no charge.
Will my keys still work afterwards?
Yes. Cloning preserves the factory immobilizer relationship rather than altering it, so the keys that worked before continue to work after. This is not an immobilizer delete and it is not a security bypass. Because the work touches immobilizer data, proof of ownership — title, registration, or a bill of sale — is required before we begin.
Can you also handle my MINI's engine ECU or a CAS module?
Yes, but under different listings. MINI engine ECU cloning, including the Siemens EMS5150 on early cars and the Bosch MEVD17 family on later ones, is covered by our BMW/MINI DME cloning service (bmw-dme-ecu-clone). CAS and EWS3 security-module work is bmw-cas-ews3-module-clone, and footwell-module faults are bmw-frm-footwell-module-repair. Text or email us the VIN and we will point you at the right one.
How much is it and how does the mail-in work?
It is $250 flat. After a technician verifies your VIN and both module labels, you ship the original and the donor to Auto Module Lab in Arlington, TX — this is a mail-in bench service, so no appointment and no vehicle visit is involved. We clone and verify on the bench and ship both modules back with tracking. Return shipping is paid at checkout and is your choice of speed: Standard $24.95, UPS 2-Day $54.95, or UPS overnight $94.95.
