Will This Fix My Problem?

Honest answer: here's exactly what this service fixes — and what it doesn't.

Fixes:

  • Used MED9 ECU installed in a Mk5 GTI, Passat B6, A3 8P, or A4 B7 and the engine cranks but will not start
  • P1570 engine start blocked by immobilizer, or an immobilizer-active message after an ECU swap
  • Original FSI / TFSI ECU failing from water ingress or corrosion but still responding — cloned before it dies

MED9 is the generation people misidentify most — check the label first

MED9 sits in an awkward spot in the VW Group timeline: it replaced ME7 on the direct-injection engines and was itself replaced by MED17, and all three generations overlap across model years on the same cars. A 2008 Golf can be MED9 or MED17 depending on engine and build date, so ordering by model year is how people end up with the wrong service and the wrong donor. The label settles it. What is a MED9 ECU and which cars use it?
MED9 is the Bosch direct-injection engine controller VW Group used from roughly 2004 to 2010, sitting between the older ME7 and the newer MED17. You will find MED9.1, MED9.1.1, and MED9.5.10 on the VW Golf Mk5 and GTI 2.0 FSI / TFSI, Jetta Mk5, Passat B6, Eos, and Scirocco, and on the Audi A3 8P, A4 B7, A6 C6, and TT Mk2, plus the Škoda Octavia II and SEAT Leon Mk2 cousins. The variant is printed on the ECU label.
Why won't a used MED9 ECU just work when I plug it in?
Because the immobilizer relationship is stored inside the ECU and still belongs to the donor car. When you install it, the module and your car's immobilizer system fail to agree, so the engine cranks and cranks without firing — often with an immobilizer warning or a stored P1570. Cloning copies your original's identity onto the donor so the mismatch never happens; immo-off removes the requirement entirely on builds with no key system left to satisfy.
How do I tell MED9 apart from ME7 or MED17?
By the label, not the model year — the three generations overlap on the same cars depending on engine and build date, which is exactly how people end up ordering the wrong service. Your ECU carries a Bosch number and a VAG part number on its sticker. Send us a clear photo of both plus the VIN and a technician tells you which family you have and which page it belongs on, before you spend anything on a donor or on shipping.
What's the difference between the clone path and the immo-off path?
Clone keeps everything factory: your original still powers up, so we copy its identity, immobilizer data, coding, and adaptations to the donor. The result installs plug-and-play, your keys keep working, and the immobilizer stays fully active. Immo-off removes the immobilizer requirement from the module, which is the right answer for a standalone build, a swapped chassis, or an orphaned platform with no cluster or keys. Both are $250 flat — you choose with a technician before you ship.
Do you supply the donor ECU?
No — you source a used donor from eBay, a salvage yard, or a parts recycler, and we verify it before you spend money. Match both numbers on the label: the Bosch number and the VAG part number. Send us photos of your original's label, the donor listing, and your VIN, and a technician confirms whether the pair will clone cleanly. That verification is free and happens before you buy or ship.
Do you offer DPF, EGR, or emissions edits on a MED9?
No. Auto Module Lab performs no emissions edits of any kind — no DPF, EGR, AdBlue/SCR, catalyst, lambda, or readiness-monitor defeat work — on any platform, for any customer, for any stated reason. This service is strictly immobilizer and identity work: cloning a module so a legitimate replacement runs, or removing an immobilizer requirement for a legitimate repair or standalone build. Please do not ask us to make an exception.
My original MED9 is completely dead — can you still help?
If it will not power up or respond at all on the bench, there is nothing to clone from, so this is not the right service. That job belongs to our ecu-advanced-recovery-service, which attempts a direct read of dead, burnt, water-damaged, and no-communication modules. Contact us with your VIN, the ECU part number, and what happened to it, and we will tell you honestly whether recovery is realistic before you spend anything.
How much is it and how does the mail-in work?
It is $250 flat for either path. After a technician verifies your VIN and both ECU labels, you mail the module or modules to Auto Module Lab in Arlington, TX — USPS to the PO Box, or UPS/FedEx to the street-addressed form of the same box, since UPS and FedEx cannot deliver to a PO Box.
