Not every gateway can be bench-cloned — we tell you before you ship

A central gateway sits at the middle of the car's network and usually holds the VIN and variant coding, so a bad one can knock several modules off the bus at once. On Mercedes ZGW/CGW, BMW ZGM, and VW/Audi J533 we can typically clone the coding, configuration, and VIN onto a part-number-matched donor so the replacement drops in without a full dealer setup. But the FCA/Chrysler-group SGW security gateway and the very newest gateways are a different story — some require online or OEM tooling and cannot be finished on the bench alone. We do not pretend otherwise: send your VIN and a module-label photo and a technician tells you honestly whether yours is a bench clone or needs a dealer step, before you buy a donor or ship anything. Proof of ownership is required.

What is a central gateway module and what does it do?
The gateway is the router at the center of a modern car's network — it passes messages between the separate CAN and Ethernet bus domains so the engine, transmission, body, and infotainment modules can talk to each other, and it's the central point a scan tool reaches the car through. It also usually stores the VIN and variant coding. Brand-specific names include Mercedes ZGW/CGW, BMW ZGM, and VW/Audi J533.
Why can't I just plug in a used gateway?
A brand-new gateway needs a full dealer setup, and a plain used one carries the donor car's VIN and coding, so the car won't accept it cleanly. Cloning copies your original gateway's coding, configuration, and VIN onto the part-number-matched donor so the replacement drops in without that full setup.
Can every gateway be cloned on the bench?
No, and we won't pretend otherwise. Mercedes ZGW/CGW, BMW ZGM, and VW/Audi J533 gateways are usually bench-cloneable. But FCA/Chrysler-group SGW security gateways and the very newest gateways can require online or OEM tooling and may not be finishable on the bench alone. Do you supply the donor gateway?
No — you source a used donor (eBay, salvage yard, parts recycler) and we verify compatibility before you buy or ship. The donor must be the same hardware / part number; send us photos of both labels plus your VIN and a technician confirms the pair will work.
My original gateway is completely dead — can you still clone it?
Only if it still powers up and responds. Cloning reads data OUT of your original, so a unit that is internally dead or unreadable cannot be cloned — there is nothing to copy. If yours is that far gone, contact us with your VIN and we'll tell you honestly whether a read is possible or whether a dealer setup is the only path.
Is this a security bypass or an immobilizer unlock?
No. This is a straight data clone of your own gateway's coding and VIN onto a matched donor — it preserves any immobilizer relationship rather than removing it, and it is not a way around a locked security gateway. That is also why proof of ownership is required before any work begins.
Will there be any step left to do at the car?
On most bench-cloneable gateways the donor drops in and the network comes back up. On certain platforms a short online or OEM step at the car may still be needed to finalize a specific relationship, and we flag that up front from your VIN so you know before you ship rather than after.
