Clone it — $350 flat

Mail your original ECU and a donor with the same full part number. We copy the original's VIN, immobilizer data, coding and adaptations onto the donor, typically within 24 hours of arrival, so it installs with the factory immobilizer intact. Every family on this page, one price. Immobilizer stays on; no emissions edits.

Volkswagen engine ECU clone service

Adapt it on the car — remote ODIS, $250

Some cars still want an on-car step after a module swap: a software version management (SVM) update, coding, or a basic-settings adaptation. Plug a J2534 pass-thru interface into the car and we run the factory ODIS software on it from our bench — no dealer visit. The same session covers coding after any other VW or Audi module replacement.

How to read a VW ECU label

Volkswagen group part numbers have three groups. The first three characters are the model or engine family the part was first released for (06J is the EA888 2.0 TSI family, 03L the common-rail TDI), the middle group is the part type (906 and 907 are engine control units), and the last three plus the trailing letters identify the exact unit and its calibration. This lookup works on the first nine characters, which is what tells you the controller family.

The same label also carries the supplier’s own number — a Bosch number starting 0 261 or 0 281, or a Continental 5WP / 5WA number — and often the controller family in plain text, such as MED17.5 or EDC17C64. Either number is enough for us to identify the module from a photo.

Two cars of the same model and year can carry two different ECU families — the Mk7 Golf 2.0T was built with Bosch MED17.5 on some lines and Continental Simos 18 on others — so the label beats the model year every time. When the lookup shows more than one prefix for your engine, that is why.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the part number on a VW engine ECU?

On the label of the module itself, printed as three groups — for example 06J 906 026 CK — next to the Bosch or Continental number. On most 2000s and 2010s Volkswagens the ECU sits in the plenum below the windshield on the driver’s side, under a plastic cover; on MQB cars it is in the same area or on the firewall. You can usually read the label without unbolting anything.

Does the donor ECU have to match the whole part number?

Yes — the full number, trailing letters included. The first nine characters identify the controller family (what this lookup matches); the letters select the calibration for your engine, gearbox and market. A clone copies your original’s data onto a donor; it cannot bridge a calibration mismatch, so we check both numbers by VIN before you buy.

My ECU prefix is not in the list. Can you still clone it?

Very likely. The catalog lists the common US prefixes, not every number VW printed in twenty-five years. Text us a photo of the label with the VIN and we tell you the family and whether it is a routine bench clone, usually within minutes.

What does “confirmed by label first” mean on the newest cars?

Volkswagens from about 2020 run Bosch MG1 or MD1 engine controllers. Some of those read and clone on the bench exactly like the MED17 generation; some do not, and the on-car route is the honest answer. We tell you which before you pay anything.

After the clone, does the car need to go to a dealer?

Usually not — the cloned ECU carries your VIN, immobilizer data, coding and adaptations. If a car still asks for an on-car software step (SVM update, coding, a basic-settings adaptation), we run it remotely through ODIS over a J2534 interface you plug into the car. That session is $250.
