
Chrysler PCM Replacement and SKIM: Why the Donor Computer Runs for Two Seconds and Dies
Two seconds of hope
Anyone who has swapped a Chrysler engine computer knows the sound. Key on, crank, the engine catches and runs — and roughly two seconds later it shuts off like someone pulled a switch. Try again, same result. Exactly two seconds, every time.
That timing is the tell. It is not fuel starvation, which sputters. It is not a bad module, which usually will not fire at all. It is the Sentry Key Immobilizer Module — SKIM — allowing the engine to start, checking whether the powertrain control module is one it recognizes, and shutting the engine down when the answer comes back no.
Understanding that one behavior is most of what you need to replace a Mopar engine computer successfully.
What SKIM is and why the PCM cares
Chrysler's immobilizer architecture involves the key transponder, the SKIM module (later integrated into other modules depending on generation), and the powertrain control module. They share a secret. When the key is turned, the system verifies the key, and then verifies that the engine computer belongs in this vehicle.
A donor PCM fails the second check. It carries the other vehicle's VIN and its own inherited security relationship, so SKIM permits the initial start and then kills it — the two-second stall that defines this platform's swap experience.
This is meaningfully different from the Ford and GM failure modes. A Ford PCM with a PATS mismatch typically will not fire at all. A GM controller mismatch produces a start-and-die with a security light. Chrysler gives you those two hopeful seconds, which is precisely why owners keep re-cranking and concluding the module is defective.
The controller families you will encounter
Chrysler's engine controller lineage spans a lot of ground, and knowing which one you have determines what is possible:
- SBEC and JTEC — the mid-1990s through mid-2000s controllers.
- NGC1 / NGC2 / NGC3 / NGC4 / NGC4A — the Next Generation Controller family that covers a huge share of 2000s and 2010s vehicles.
- GPEC / GPEC2 / GPEC2A / GPEC3 — the later generation, including the Hemi applications.

The three ways this gets solved
Write the VIN and address SKIM on the bench. The donor module is given your vehicle identity and the immobilizer side is handled before it ever ships. This is the path behind credible pre-programmed units, and it is why they simply install and run.
Clone your original. If your existing PCM still reads, copying its data onto the replacement carries everything across — VIN, calibration, and the security relationship — producing a true plug-in. When available this is both cheaper and cleaner, and it is why any honest shop asks whether your original still communicates before selling you hardware.
Dealer replacement. A new module plus programming plus a security relearn performed on the vehicle. It works and it is the most expensive route.
What does not work is installing an untouched donor and hoping. On this platform that produces the two-second stall with complete reliability.

What it costs in 2026

The related-module trap
Chrysler vehicles of this era have a second expensive module that produces overlapping symptoms, and confusing the two is costly.
The TIPM — Totally Integrated Power Module — is the fuse box and body computer in one, and on 2011-2013 vehicles its failures are legendary. A TIPM fault can produce a no-start, and a PCM fault can produce a no-start, but the surrounding symptoms differ:
Points to the PCM: the engine fires and dies in about two seconds; the security light behaves oddly; the fault followed a computer swap.
Points to the TIPM: the fuel pump runs constantly or not at all; wipers operate on their own; doors lock and unlock by themselves; multiple unrelated systems misbehave at once.

Unlock versus replace
One more distinction worth drawing, because it saves people from buying hardware they do not need.

The general principle across all of this: do not buy a module until you know the one in your vehicle cannot be salvaged. Reading, cloning, or re-identifying the computer you already own is almost always cheaper than replacement, and the repair versus replacement versus reprogramming framework applies here as cleanly as anywhere in the catalog.
Making sure you order correctly
Chrysler part numbers within a single model year vary by engine, transmission and emissions package. Two vehicles that look identical in a parking lot can take different controllers.
Give any supplier three things before ordering: your VIN, the part number off your existing PCM, and your engine and transmission. A supplier who takes payment without asking for those has not verified anything, and the mismatch lands on you.
Vehicle longevity makes this worth doing properly. The two-second stall versus everything else
Because the symptom is so specific, it is worth separating it from the failures that look adjacent.
Fires and dies at roughly two seconds, every attempt — immobilizer refusing to authorize an unrecognized computer. This is the signature covered throughout this article.
Cranks and never fires at all — usually not an immobilizer authorization issue. Look at fuel, ignition, and whether the module is communicating at all.
Runs but poorly — a mismatched calibration rather than a security refusal, or a genuine mechanical or sensor fault.
Starts fine but electrical systems misbehave — the power distribution module rather than the engine computer.

What the bench work actually involves
Re-identifying a Chrysler engine controller is memory-level work, not a scan-tool menu item.
The module's stored vehicle identity is rewritten, and the immobilizer relationship is addressed so the module and the vehicle's security system will agree. On some controllers this means working with the EEPROM directly; on others it is handled through the controller's programming interface. Either way it happens with the module on a bench under controlled power rather than on the vehicle.
That control matters for the same reason it matters on every other platform: writing to a module's memory is when it is most vulnerable, and SAE International's J2534 framework treats stable power and an uninterrupted link as preconditions for reprogramming rather than optional precautions. An interrupted write does not produce a failed job — it produces a destroyed module.
Where used cores actually come from
The economics of this repair rest on a large supply of inexpensive donor modules, and it is worth knowing what you are buying into.
Used Chrysler engine controllers are abundant on eBay and through dismantlers because these vehicles were produced in enormous numbers and are now old enough to be regularly parted out. Prices are low precisely because most buyers discover the modules do not work in another vehicle and stop bidding.
That is the arbitrage a competent bench shop operates in: cheap hardware plus the capability to re-identify it equals a working part at a fraction of dealer cost. It also means the quality question is real — a donor from a flood vehicle or a high-mileage unit with heat damage is a poor foundation regardless of how well it is programmed. Ask your supplier whether units are tested before programming, not just after.
Why these vehicles are worth repairing

At that stage the repair-or-replace decision turns on the size of the bill. A $399 programmed module keeps the vehicle earning; a four-figure dealer quote frequently sends it to auction. That gap is the entire reason the specialist bench market exists.
A worked example: the 2012 Ram 1500
Following one job through makes the decision tree concrete.
A 5.7 Ram arrived after a PCM swap the owner performed himself. Correct part number, careful install — and the engine fired and died at two seconds, every attempt, exactly as described above. He had spent three days on fuel pressure, crank sensors and a new fuel pump before someone recognized the timing.
The donor module went on the bench. His VIN was written to it, the SKIM relationship was addressed against his existing keys, and it went back. It started on the first attempt and has run since.
The expensive part of that story was not the module. It was the fuel pump he did not need, plus three days of a work truck sitting. All of it avoidable by recognizing one sound — an engine that runs for exactly two seconds is not starving for fuel, it is being switched off.
Ordering without a mismatch
Chrysler part numbers vary within a single model year by engine, transmission and emissions package, so two apparently identical trucks can take different controllers.
Give any supplier your VIN, the part number off your existing PCM, and your engine and transmission. Also tell them whether you have working keys, because an all-keys-lost situation is a different scope of work than matching a module to keys you already hold, and it is better established before the module is prepared than after.
A supplier who takes payment without those details has verified nothing, and on this platform the mismatch does not announce itself until the engine is already running for two seconds.
All keys lost changes the job
One scenario deserves its own note because it changes both scope and price, and people routinely discover it too late.
Everything described above assumes you have at least one working key. The module is matched to the immobilizer and the keys you already hold, and the vehicle starts. That is the ordinary case.
If you have no working keys, the job is different. The immobilizer side has to be established from scratch rather than matched to something existing, and depending on the generation that can mean additional modules coming to the bench or new keys being programmed as part of the work. It is entirely doable — it is simply not the same service, and a shop that prepares your module assuming you have keys will hand you something that does not solve your problem.
So state it up front. "I have two working keys" and "I have none" are the two answers that route the job correctly, and the difference is worth more than any other single sentence you can send a supplier.
A note on flood and heat-damaged donors
Because these vehicles are old enough to be parted out in volume, the used-module supply includes cores that should not be sold.
Flood vehicles are the main hazard. A control module that sat in water may power up, may even program successfully, and then fail weeks later as corrosion progresses under the conformal coating. Heat damage from an engine-bay mounting location produces a similar delayed failure.
This is why the question to ask a supplier is not only whether they program, but whether they test before they program. Programming a bad core produces a module that passes its post-flash check and dies in your driveway a month later — and by then the warranty conversation is much harder than it needed to be. Any shop worth buying from screens cores first and treats a failed screen as a reason to pull the part, not a reason to ship it faster.

The bottom line
The two-second stall is not a mystery and it is not a defective part — it is a Chrysler engine computer being refused by an immobilizer that does not recognize it. That refusal is by design, and it is what makes an untouched donor PCM useless in your vehicle no matter how correct the part number is.
