
What Still Has to Be Relearned After a Module Arrives
The box arrived. The job is not over.
The most common message a mail-in bench gets, two days after a module ships back, is some version of this: it is installed, it runs, but the traction light is on. Or the transmission shifts hard. Or the airbag lamp will not go out. Or the truck starts and drives but throws a code the owner does not recognize.
Almost none of those are programming failures. They are relearn steps that have not happened yet.
Here is the thing nobody explains at the counter: a modern control module ships from any bench — ours, a dealer, or the module supplier — carrying its calibration, its configuration, and its identity, but not the learned values that only exist once it has spent time in your specific vehicle. Those values are the accumulated result of the module watching your engine, your transmission, your steering, and your sensors. They cannot be created on a bench, because a bench has none of those things.
So this article is the handoff document. It walks module by module through what still has to happen after installation, which parts need a scan tool, which are drive cycles, which are key dances anyone can do in a driveway, and how to tell the difference between a relearn that has not finished and an actual fault.
Why a correctly programmed module still lights the dash
Two separate things live in a control module. The first is what the manufacturer put there: the calibration, the software, and the configuration that says what your vehicle has. That part is what bench programming establishes, and it is what we verify before a module ships.
The second is what the vehicle taught it: crankshaft position variation, throttle rest position, fuel trim correction, shift pressure adaptation, steering angle center, tire pressure sensor identities, key identities, and the pass or fail state of every emissions readiness monitor. Those values are learned, and after a module change they start empty or at a default.
An empty learned value is not a fault, but a module that has not yet learned something will often set a code saying so — because from the module is point of view, not knowing is a condition worth reporting. That is why a perfectly good installation can produce a warning lamp on the first key cycle and a clean dash three days later.

Engine controller: ECM and PCM
The engine controller has the longest relearn list, and skipping any of it produces symptoms that look alarming and are not.
Crankshaft position variation relearn. This is the one people miss most often, and it is not optional on the platforms that require it. The controller has to learn the tiny manufacturing variation in your reluctor wheel so it can distinguish a genuine misfire from mechanical tolerance. Until it does, misfire detection is either disabled or unreliable, and on GM applications the vehicle typically sets a code stating the variation has not been learned.
This needs a scan tool. The procedure is a controlled deceleration under specific conditions with the tool commanding the learn, and there is no key-cycle substitute. It is quick — a few minutes with a competent tool — but it is not something you can drive your way into.
Throttle and idle relearn. An electronic throttle body has a rest position the controller must learn before it can hold a stable idle. Some platforms do this automatically over several key cycles with the engine idling untouched; others require a tool-commanded reset. Symptoms of skipping it are a hunting idle, a high idle that will not come down, or a stall on the first few cold starts.
Fuel trim reset and relearn. Long-term fuel trims are correction values built up over many hours of driving. A replacement controller starts at zero. That is normal and harmless, but it does mean the vehicle needs real driving before its fueling settles, and it means a fuel-trim reading taken twenty minutes after installation tells you nothing.
Readiness monitors and the drive cycle. This is where a lot of otherwise successful installs run into an inspection problem. Clearing a controller wipes the readiness monitors, and until they run and pass, an OBD-based emissions test will reject the vehicle. Most state programs allow at most one incomplete monitor on 2001-and-newer vehicles and two on older ones, under the OBD inspection framework administered through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and state agencies. Completing them takes a proper drive cycle — a mix of cold start, steady cruise, and deceleration — often over more than one day, and the monitor and drive-cycle definitions themselves sit on decades of diagnostic standards work published through SAE International. Transmission controller: TCM and TCU
Transmission adaptation is the clearest example of learned data that cannot be manufactured on a bench, and we say so plainly in the service description itself: bench work matches and prepares the module, and the shift-adaptation drive cycle must be completed at the car.
Adaptive shift relearn, or quick learn. Every automatic transmission of the last twenty-five years adjusts its clutch apply pressures and shift timing to compensate for wear, fluid condition, and unit-to-unit variation. After a controller change those adaptations start at default, which is why the first drive after installation often feels harsh, flared, or oddly delayed. That is not a failing transmission. That is a transmission being driven by a controller that has not met it yet.
Some manufacturers provide a tool-commanded fast adaptation procedure, sometimes called quick learn or a garage shift routine, that compresses the process into a structured sequence at idle and low speed. Others simply require driving. Either way the finishing work is a real drive — typically a mix of light-throttle upshifts, moderate acceleration, and full stops, repeated over several cycles until shift quality settles.
Reset the adapts before you start. After a repair, adaptation values that were learned around a failing component are worse than useless. On most platforms the correct sequence is to clear the existing adaptation with a scan tool and then run the relearn drive, rather than layering new learning on top of old.

ABS and electronic brake control module
Brake modules carry the most safety-critical post-install work on this list, and two steps are mandatory.
The bleed procedure. An ABS module contains a hydraulic control unit full of small valve passages. If air has entered the unit — and it usually has, if the module was off the car — a conventional pedal bleed will not clear it, because the trapped air sits behind valves that are closed at rest. The correct procedure uses a scan tool to cycle the ABS solenoids and pump while bleeding, so the air actually has somewhere to go. Skipping this leaves a spongy pedal that does not improve no matter how long you bleed at the calipers.
Steering angle sensor calibration. Stability control has to know where straight ahead is. After a module change, a battery disconnect, or any steering work, the sensor has to be re-zeroed. On some vehicles this is a tool-commanded calibration; on others it is a defined sequence of lock-to-lock turns and a short straight drive. Until it is done, the stability and traction lamps stay on and the system is inactive.
That inactivity is the part worth taking seriously. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has estimated that electronic stability control reduces the risk of fatal single-vehicle crashes by roughly half, and ESC has been required on all new light vehicles in the United States since the 2012 model year under the federal standard administered by NHTSA. A vehicle driving around with an uncalibrated steering angle sensor is a vehicle with that protection switched off.
Wheel speed sensor plausibility. Some modules also need a short low-speed drive before they will accept the wheel speed signals as valid and extinguish the lamp. If everything else has been done correctly, give it a few minutes of driving before concluding something is wrong.

Airbag and SRS module
The airbag module has the shortest post-install list and the least tolerance for guessing.
After a crash-data clear, the module returns ready to reinstall. What has to happen at the car is a proper verification of the lamp self-test: with the key on, the airbag warning lamp should illuminate for a few seconds as a bulb check and then go out and stay out. That behavior — on, then off, then nothing — is the system telling you every connection and every squib circuit reads within specification.
If the lamp stays on, does not come on at all, or flashes a pattern, the module is reporting something. Common causes after a reinstall are a connector not fully seated, a yellow safety connector under a seat left disconnected, or a seat-position or occupant-classification component that was disturbed during the repair. On many vehicles, occupant classification systems have their own separate zero or calibration routine that has to be run with a scan tool after seat work.
Advanced frontal airbag requirements have applied to all light vehicles since the 2007 model year under NHTSA rulemaking, which means practically every vehicle in service has occupant sensing of some kind in the loop. Do not treat a lit lamp as cosmetic and do not clear the code without reading it first.

Body control module
The body module touches more customer-visible features than anything else on this list, so its relearn list is the longest in terms of individual items — but most of them need no tools at all.
Window and sunroof initialization. One-touch up, one-touch down, pinch protection, and sunroof end stops are learned positions. After a body module change they are typically lost, and the fix is a short sequence per window: hold the switch down until the glass is fully lowered, hold a few seconds longer, then hold up until fully closed and hold again. Sunroofs have an equivalent routine. No tool required, and skipping it is why the driver window will not express-close after a repair.
TPMS relearn. Tire pressure sensor identities are stored per vehicle. Direct systems require the module to be taught which four sensor identities belong to it, either with a TPMS activation tool, through a tool-driven relearn procedure, or on some vehicles by driving for a set period so the module hears each sensor. Tire pressure monitoring has been required on light vehicles since the 2008 model year under the standard administered by NHTSA, so essentially every vehicle you will work on has this step.
Key and immobilizer relearn. On many platforms the body module holds part of the immobilizer relationship, so the existing keys have to be re-paired after a replacement. GM applications use a well-known no-tool relearn: key on for ten minutes until the security lamp goes out, key off, repeated three times. Other manufacturers require a scan tool and a security code. Any work involving keys or immobilizer data requires proof of ownership, without exception — for shops and locksmiths as well as vehicle owners.
Option configuration checks. Remote start, trailer package, lighting content, and tire size are configuration rather than relearn, and on a properly programmed module they are already set. Verify them anyway on the first drive, because a mismatch here is easy to fix early and annoying to chase later.

Instrument cluster
Cluster work has a shorter list, but each item is worth confirming before the vehicle leaves.
Mileage confirmation. After a cluster repair or replacement with mileage sync, the first thing to verify is that the displayed odometer matches the documented true mileage of the vehicle and matches what is stored elsewhere in the vehicle, since several modules keep their own mileage copy. Synchronization is to true mileage only. A cluster reading that disagrees with another module is something to resolve immediately, not later.
Gauge sweep and self-test. Most clusters run a startup sweep and lamp check. Watch it. A needle that does not sweep, a segment that stays dark, or a warning lamp missing from the bulb check tells you something before a customer finds it.
Warning lamp inventory. Cluster lamps are driven by network messages from other modules. If a lamp is lit after a cluster change, read the codes rather than assuming the cluster is at fault — the cluster is often just the messenger for an ABS or body module that has not finished its own relearn.

Infotainment and head unit
Infotainment sits slightly apart because much of its post-install work is account and anti-theft related rather than mechanical.
The head unit or APIM has to accept its VIN and pass whatever anti-theft pairing the platform uses before audio, navigation, and connectivity come alive. On many vehicles, features are then enabled from an as-built or configuration record, so the module knows whether the vehicle has navigation, a premium amplifier, a rear camera, or connected services. Expect a system reset and a settling period on first power-up, and expect Bluetooth pairings and user profiles to be gone.
It is worth testing this thoroughly before declaring the job finished, because infotainment and connectivity have sat at or near the top of reported problem categories in J.D. Power quality studies for years running. Customers notice a phone that will not pair far faster than they notice a fuel trim.

Before you book the install
A short list that prevents most of the frustration:
- Confirm your installer has a capable scan tool for your make. A code reader is not enough. Crankshaft variation relearn, ABS bleed, and steering angle calibration all need bidirectional control. Independent shop labor commonly runs well above $100 per hour in much of the country, according to repair-cost reporting from Consumer Reports, so an hour of relearn work is worth quoting up front rather than discovering later.
- Ask specifically which relearns your vehicle needs. The list above is representative, not universal — platforms vary, and your installer should be able to name the ones that apply.
- Do the relearns before you road test. Driving first and diagnosing afterward means diagnosing a vehicle that is guaranteed to have codes.
- Read the codes before clearing them. Codes set during the relearn window tell you what has not finished. Clearing blindly destroys that information.
- Give fuel trims and readiness monitors real time. If you have an emissions inspection due, plan several days of normal driving between the installation and the appointment.
- Reconnect the battery properly and check every connector. A partly seated connector is the single most common cause of a post-install fault that looks like a programming problem.
If something still is not right after all of that, tell us what codes are present and what relearns were completed. That information turns a vague problem into a solvable one within a phone message, and it is far more useful than a description of the symptom alone.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a scan tool to install a mail-in module?
For most modules, yes — at least for part of the job. Crankshaft variation relearn, ABS bleeding with solenoid cycling, steering angle sensor calibration, and most infotainment pairing all require bidirectional scan tool control. Window initialization, GM key relearns, and drive-cycle-based learning need no tool at all, so the honest answer is that it depends on which module you are installing and which relearns apply.
Why is my transmission shifting badly right after installing the module?
Because its adaptive values start at default and it has not learned your transmission yet. Clutch apply pressures and shift timing are adapted over real driving, so the first drives after a controller change frequently feel harsh, flared, or delayed. That normally settles over several drive cycles, and on many platforms a scan tool can run a fast adaptation routine to shorten the process considerably.
The airbag light is still on after I reinstalled the module. What now?
Read the codes before doing anything else, and check the connectors first. The most common causes after a reinstall are a connector not fully seated, a yellow safety connector under a seat left unplugged, or an occupant classification system that needs its own calibration after seat work. Do not clear the code without reading it, because that code is the only thing telling you which circuit is unhappy.
How long does a readiness drive cycle actually take?
Plan on several days of normal mixed driving rather than a single trip. Monitors require specific conditions — a genuine cold start, sustained steady cruise, and defined deceleration periods — and some monitors will not run until others have completed. If an emissions inspection is scheduled, leave a real buffer between installing the module and the appointment.
Can you do the relearns for me since you programmed the module?
No, and no bench anywhere can. Every relearn in this guide requires the module to be installed in your running vehicle, measuring your engine, transmission, steering, and sensors. We are mail-in and bench-only, nationwide, so the vehicle-side work belongs to you or your installer. What we can do is tell you exactly which relearns your specific job needs before you book the install.
Will a relearn erase the programming you did on the bench?
No. Relearn and calibration procedures write learned values, not calibration or configuration data. Your VIN, your calibration, and your option content stay exactly as programmed. Adaptation resets and relearns operate in an entirely separate area of memory, which is why it is safe to reset adaptations as often as a repair requires.
Does a relearn requirement mean something is wrong with the module?
No — it means the module is new to your vehicle. A code stating that a value has not been learned is the module reporting an empty parameter, not a defect. If a lamp remains on after every applicable relearn has been completed correctly, that is the point at which you start looking for an actual fault.
The bottom line
A mail-in module arrives correctly programmed, verified, and ready to install. What it does not arrive with is the learned data that only your vehicle can teach it, and that gap is where nearly every post-install complaint comes from.
Budget an hour with a capable scan tool after installation. Run the crankshaft variation relearn and the throttle relearn on an engine controller. Reset the adaptations and drive a transmission controller until it settles. Bleed an ABS module properly with solenoid cycling and re-zero the steering angle sensor. Watch the airbag lamp complete its self-test. Initialize the windows, relearn the TPMS sensors, and re-pair the keys on a body module. Confirm mileage and gauge sweep on a cluster. Pair and configure infotainment. Then read the codes, and only then decide whether anything is actually wrong.
