What Range Rover, Land Rover and Jaguar module programming costs

As of October 2026, mail-in module work for Range Rover, Land Rover and Jaguar vehicles at Auto Module Lab runs from $250 to $550 per job. A CEM or fuse-box body-module clone is $250, a CPLA engine-ECM clone is $250, a KVM or RFA virginize is $300, key programming for all-keys-lost or add-a-key is $550, and the remote recovery of a Jaguar XF's corrupted junction box over your own J2534 interface is $550. Return shipping on mail-in work is chosen and paid at checkout from $29.95.

Those are national prices. You order online, we email a prepaid inbound label, you ship the module, and the work is done at our Arlington, Texas workshop. The remote recovery is the exception: nothing ships, and the car stays on your lift. Nothing about the price changes with your ZIP code, and on these cars that matters, because a Range Rover owner two hundred miles from the nearest dealer is a common customer.

The rest of this guide puts every JLR job into one table, explains what moves the number, and separates the jobs a bench can do from the ones only the factory server can. If a used module was fitted and the car will not start, the Range Rover and Jaguar KVM no-start recovery guide explains what has happened before you read about the money.

Why a JLR module is never just a part

Jaguar and Land Rover spread vehicle identity and security across several modules and lock them to each other. The keyless vehicle module, the KVM on the 2010 to 2017 cars and the RFA on the 2018 and later ones, holds the key relationship. The central electronic module or fuse-box body module holds the car configuration and its side of the immobilizer. The engine ECM holds the VIN and the other side of the immobilizer. The Jaguar XF keeps its smart-key and configuration data in the central junction box. Every one of those modules expects the others to agree with it, so a used module arrives married to another car and a replacement arrives knowing nothing, and in both cases the car refuses to start until identity has been moved, wiped or taught.

That is what every price on this page pays for. The hardware is usually the cheap part. A used CEM for an L322 Range Rover costs little; making it believe it is yours is the job.

The fleet is large and ageing. JLR retailed roughly 430,000 vehicles worldwide in its 2024 fiscal year according to JLR, and the brands have been selling at volume in North America for two decades. The average light vehicle on U.S. roads was about 12.6 years old in 2024 according to S&P Global Mobility, which places the L322 and L320 Range Rovers, the LR3 and LR4, and the X250 Jaguar XF squarely in the years where a body module or an engine computer is a normal repair rather than a rare one, and these are not cheap cars to take to a dealer.

Range Rover, Land Rover and Jaguar module cost by module (October 2026)

Every price below is the flat fee from the live service page it links to. Mail-in jobs add return shipping at checkout: standard $29.95, UPS 2-day $54.95 or UPS overnight $94.95. The remote recovery has no shipping.

Module and job Flat price You send in Best when
Key programming, KVM, all-keys-lost or add-a-key $550 The KVM (or pre-2015 BCM), depending on the car No working key, or a spare needed, on a 2010 to 2017 Range Rover, Land Rover or Jaguar
Key programming, RFA, all-keys-lost or add-a-key $550, plus $250 only if the RFA's MCU is locked and has to be replaced The RFA No working key, or a spare needed, on a 2018 or newer Range Rover, Land Rover or Jaguar
KVM or RFA virginize $300 The used KVM or RFA A used keyless module the car refuses, or a module whose security counter is exhausted; returns blank for pairing
CEM or fuse-box BCM clone $250 Your readable original plus a part-number-matched donor Water in the fuse box on an L322, L320, LR3, LR4 or L405, or a used CEM the car refuses
CPLA engine-ECM clone $250 Your readable original plus a matched donor A replacement Bosch MED17 or MEDC17 engine ECM that cranks but never starts, roughly 2011 to 2021
Jaguar XF BCM and CJB remote recovery $550 Nothing; the car stays on your lift with a JLR-capable J2534 interface and a battery support unit Smart Key Not Found or a no-start after a flat or jump-started battery on an X250 or X260 XF
Instrument cluster repair and mileage sync $200 The cluster Dead gauges, display faults, or a donor cluster that needs the true mileage carried over
ABS module repair $499 The ABS controller Electronic ABS failure on the unit you own; about a week on the bench, 1-year warranty
Airbag module crash-data clear $75 The SRS module Crash data stored after a collision repair
Keyless entry receiver repair $125 The receiver module Remotes stopped working and the keys have been ruled out
Bench evaluation $150 per hour Any module Nobody has proven which module failed yet

Two things stand out. The jobs that move identity between physical modules, the clones, sit at $250. The jobs that create or rebuild security data, keys and the XF recovery, sit at $550, because they carry the most risk and the most verification. The virginize sits between them because it prepares a module for pairing without doing the pairing.

What changes the price

Which module holds the keys on your car. On the 2010 to 2017 cars the key relationship lives in the KVM; on 2018 and later cars it is the RFA; on some pre-2015 cars it is integrated into the body control module. The KVM key programming service covers the KVM and BCM cars and the RFA key programming service the 2018 and later ones, both at $550 (the RFA adds $250 only when its MCU is locked and has to be replaced). What you ship differs, and we confirm it from the VIN before you remove anything. The Range Rover all-keys-lost guide walks through which module comes out on which car.

Whether the original still reads. The cheapest outcome on a body-module or engine-computer problem is a clone: the original powers up, we read it, and its data goes onto a donor. When the original is dead there is nothing to clone, and the job changes to preparing a donor for pairing, which on the keyless side is the virginize at $300 followed by key programming. Tell us honestly whether the original responds, because it decides the path and what has to ship.

Whether a donor is involved, and whether it matches. The CEM clone, the CPLA ECM clone and the virginize each start with a module you supply, and the part number on the label is what decides a match. JLR part numbers supersede each other frequently; the CPLA engine ECM, for example, supersedes several earlier numbers, and the CPLA ECM cloning guide sets out how to read the label before buying anything.

Mail-in or remote. The XF junction-box recovery is a remote job by design: the module is rebuilt in the car over a secure J2534 session, which needs a JLR-capable pass-thru device, a stable wired connection and a battery support unit on your side. Pass-thru programming is built on the SAE J2534 interface standard, and the service-information rules published by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency are why that access exists for independent shops. The Jaguar XF BCM remote recovery guide explains the session step by step.

The age of the car. The newest Range Rovers, Defenders and Jaguars route key generation and some module pairing through the factory server, and a bench cannot stand in for it. We verify each late-model request against what the platform allows before taking the order rather than after the module arrives.

Proof of ownership is required on every key, virginize, immobilizer-related and body-module order. It is a condition of the work, not a formality.

Keys and keyless modules: the $550 and $300 jobs

A lost-key Range Rover is the single most expensive dealer visit most of these owners will ever have, because the dealer answer frequently involves a new keyless module as well as the keys. The key programming service at $550 handles all-keys-lost and add-a-key on the bench from the module you ship, KVM, RFA or integrated BCM, and the Range Rover and Jaguar key programming cost guide sets that against the dealer route in detail.

The KVM and RFA virginize at $300 is the companion job for a used keyless module. A used KVM or RFA arrives married to another car, and a module whose security counter has been exhausted by failed attempts will not pair at all; the virginize wipes it back to blank so it can be paired to your VIN, by us through key programming or by a dealer. The KVM and RFA virginize walkthrough covers the part prefixes and what comes back.

Body and engine modules: the $250 clones

Water is the enemy of the Land Rover body module. The fuse box on the L322 and L320 Range Rovers, the LR3 and LR4 and the L405 sits where water collects, and a flooded CEM produces a car that will not start, will not lock or does both at random. The CEM and fuse-box BCM clone at $250 reads your original, if it still responds, and moves the VIN, the car configuration and the immobilizer relationship onto a matched donor so it is plug-and-play. If your original is already dead, we say so and the path changes.

On the engine side, the CPLA ECM clone at $250 does the same for the Bosch MED17 and MEDC17 engine computers on the roughly 2011 to 2021 petrol Range Rovers, Land Rovers and Jaguars: a used ECM that cranks but never starts because it belongs to another car becomes yours, immobilizer intact.

"On a Range Rover the question is never whether the car can be fixed, it is which module is holding the key to the other modules. Read the labels, find out which originals still talk, and the job is usually one clone and one bench fee. Guess, and it is three dealer visits." — Independent Land Rover and Jaguar electronics technician, 16+ years (anonymized)

The Jaguar XF: the $550 remote recovery

The X250 and X260 XF have a failure of their own: a flat, disconnected or jump-started battery corrupts the central junction box, and the car reports Smart Key Not Found or refuses to start even though the key and the battery are now fine. Owners buy keys they do not need, because the car reports a key problem when the junction box, which Jaguar describes as the hub of the car's body electrics, is what has lost its mind. The Jaguar XF BCM and CJB remote recovery at $550 rebuilds the corrupted module over a secure remote J2534 session with the car where it sits, which is why it ships nothing and why it needs a JLR-capable interface and a battery support unit at your end.

Dealer versus mail-in

The dealer route uses the factory server and is the only route for the newest cars' key generation and some pairing. It carries a bundled labour bill, parts-counter module prices and, on a Range Rover, a parts-counter module is rarely cheap. Hourly shop rates are commonly reported in the low-to-mid hundreds per hour by outlets such as Kelley Blue Book, and the vehicle has to be at the dealer for the duration.

The mail-in bench route is the table above. It wins when a module has to be read outside the car, when identity has to move from one physical module to another, when a used module has to be wiped before it will pair, or when the car is nowhere near a dealer. It cannot generate factory-server authorisations, and we decline those orders up front rather than taking them.

When the cheapest job is no module at all

More Range Rover and Jaguar no-starts are batteries than modules. A battery that collapses during cranking, a key with a dead cell, corrosion at a junction-box connector and a module that has lost its network connection through a wet plug all produce the security messages that owners read as a module failure. Rule those out first. If nobody has proven which module failed, the bench evaluation at $150 per hour is the honest first step: the module is powered on a regulated supply, communication is tested, memory is read, the board is inspected, and you are told what was measured before any repair is quoted.

How the mail-in process works

Choose the service, pay online and pick a return shipping tier. We email a prepaid inbound label within minutes. Ship the module, and the donor if the job needs one, in a padded box with the VIN, the stored codes, photos of both labels and a note on whether the original still powers up. Typical bench turnaround on the JLR jobs above is a business day once the module arrives; the ABS repair runs about a week because of the test cycle. The remote XF recovery is booked for a time when the car is on your lift. We text updates to the number on the order, and a job we cannot complete is reported before it is charged.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Range Rover key programming cost by mail? All-keys-lost or add-a-key on a 2010 to 2025 Range Rover, Land Rover or Jaguar is $550 plus return shipping chosen at checkout from $29.95. You ship the KVM, RFA or integrated BCM, not the car, and proof of ownership is required. If a used keyless module is involved it is virginized first for $300.

What does it cost to clone a Land Rover CEM or fuse-box module? $250 plus return shipping. You supply your readable original and a part-number-matched donor, and the donor comes back carrying your VIN, car configuration and immobilizer relationship, plug-and-play. A dead original changes the path, so tell us whether it still responds.

Can you program a used Jaguar or Range Rover ECM to my car? Yes, through the CPLA engine-ECM clone at $250, which moves your original's VIN, immobilizer data and configuration onto a part-number-matched donor on the Bosch MED17 and MEDC17 units of roughly 2011 to 2021. The original has to read and the donor has to match the label.

My Jaguar XF says Smart Key Not Found after a flat battery. Do I need a new key? Usually not. A flat, disconnected or jump-started battery corrupts the XF's central junction box, and the remote recovery at $550 rebuilds it over a J2534 session with the car on your lift. Diagnose that before buying a key you may not need.

Do I need proof of ownership? Yes, on every key, virginize, immobilizer-related and body-module order. It is a condition of the work. A title, registration or bill of sale in your name, matched to the VIN, is what we need.

Can you program keys for a 2022 or newer Range Rover or Defender? Not always. The newest cars route key generation and some module pairing through the factory server, and we verify each late-model request against what the platform allows before taking the order rather than after the module arrives.

Does the price include return shipping? No. Return shipping is selected and paid at checkout from $29.95, with UPS 2-day at $54.95 and UPS overnight at $94.95. The inbound label to us is emailed to you after payment. The remote XF recovery ships nothing.

The bottom line

Range Rover, Land Rover and Jaguar module programming by mail is $250 for a CEM or CPLA engine-ECM clone, $300 for a KVM or RFA virginize, and $550 for key programming or the Jaguar XF remote recovery, with the universal cluster, ABS, airbag and keyless services at their usual prices and return shipping paid at checkout from $29.95. The number is decided by which module holds the keys on your car, whether the original still reads, whether a donor matches the label, and whether the job is one a bench can do or one only the factory server can. Read the labels, tell us which originals still talk, and the job costs one bench fee instead of three dealer visits.
