So you have two familiar options and both of them cost you. What to send out and what to keep in house

Keep the work that is yours. Send the work that needs a bench.

Keep in house:

  • Diagnosis. You are on the vehicle and you have the history. Nobody remote diagnoses better than the person with the scan tool plugged in.
  • Removal and reinstallation. This is billable labor at your rate, and it is the part a customer cannot shop.
  • Anything achievable with a normal aftermarket scan tool: relearns, resets, adaptations, and the routines your existing tooling already covers.
  • Wiring, connectors, grounds, and the entire circuit side of the fault. Ninety percent of "bad module" calls are not bad modules.

Send out:

Keeping the vehicle out of your way

The operational advantage of mail-in is that the vehicle and the module are decoupled. Use it deliberately.

Pull the module in one visit. Reassemble everything you can around the hole — put the trim back, secure the harness with the connector bagged and labeled, and make the vehicle safe to move under its own power or safe to roll. Then get it off the lift. Park it out back, or better, hand it back to the customer if it is drivable and the missing module does not make it undriveable or unsafe. Proof of ownership is required for any key, immobilizer, or security-linked work, without exception, and when a shop is the shipper the shop is responsible for obtaining it from the vehicle owner.

That is not a formality and it is not negotiable. It means documentation tying the registered owner to the vehicle — a registration or title — provided before security work begins. Vehicle theft is the reason this exists. Any facility that programs keys or touches immobilizer data without verifying ownership is part of that problem. A lab that asks you for documentation is doing its job; a lab that does not should worry you as a professional.

The related item is odometer work. Cluster repair and cluster replacement often involve mileage, and mileage is only ever synced to the vehicle's true value. Federal law under 49 U.S.C.
