
How to Disable DRL on a Canadian or Imported GM Truck (US-Spec BCM Conversion)
Why a Canadian truck's DRL will not turn off
If you have bought a Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe or Yukon that started life in Canada and is now titled in the United States, you have probably noticed the daytime running lamps are always on and there is no way to switch them off — not in the driver information center, not by holding the headlight switch, not by any of the tricks that work on a US truck. That is not a fault. It is exactly how the truck was built, and it is built that way on purpose.
Canada has required daytime running lamps on every new passenger vehicle since December 1, 1989 — the standard has been in force on the entire new-vehicle fleet since the 1990 model year. The requirement lives in the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 108, the Canadian counterpart to the American lighting rule, administered by Transport Canada. Because the mandate applies to how the vehicle operates, not just what hardware it carries, a Canadian-market GM truck has its DRL behavior locked on at the configuration level so the driver cannot defeat it.
The United States is different. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108, administered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, permits daytime running lamps but has never required them. That single difference — mandatory in Canada, optional in the US — is why the same truck, same engine, same body, behaves differently depending on which side of the border it was built for. The Canadian one is configured to keep the lamps on; the US one is configured to let you turn them off.
The trap: reflashing to "stock" does not fix it
The most common mistake — and it is one professional shops make, not just owners — is to assume that reprogramming the BCM to the latest or "stock" calibration will reset the truck to normal US behavior. It will not, and understanding why saves a lot of wasted time.
GM's Service Programming System (SPS) and the dealer flow behind it calibrate a module to the VIN's build record. When you tell SPS to program a control module for a specific VIN, GM's servers look up what that VIN was originally built as and hand back the calibration that matches that build. A truck built for the Canadian market has a Canadian build record, so "program to stock" pulls the Canadian calibration — the one with mandatory always-on DRL. You can flash it ten times and get the same result each time, because you are reloading the configuration you are trying to change.
This is worth stating plainly because it is counter-intuitive: the always-on DRL is not a bug in an old calibration you can update away. It is baked into the country configuration of the build. Reflashing respects that configuration. To change the behavior you have to change the configuration itself — revert the lighting logic from Canadian-spec to US-spec — which is a reconfiguration, not a re-flash.
The distinction matters for a second reason. Some owners try to solve it by cloning a US truck's BCM and changing the VIN, or by swapping in a used US-market BCM. Both approaches drag in problems that are worse than the one you started with, as we will cover below.
What actually changes the behavior
On the 2014-2020 GM full-size trucks and SUVs — the K2 platform, running the Global-A electrical architecture — daytime running lamp behavior is a Body Control Module configuration, and it can be reconfigured. Reverting a Canadian truck to US-spec headlamp control tells the BCM to allow the lamps to switch off the way a US-built truck does, while leaving everything else about the truck untouched.
This is the same category of work that lets these trucks be customized in dozens of other ways — the BCM holds hundreds of configurable parameters. Reconfiguring the lighting is simply the parameter set that a re-imported truck needs. Because it is a configuration change tied to the VIN, it does not disturb the truck's anti-theft data, its option coding, or its odometer — it only changes the lighting logic you asked to change.

Why not just clone a US BCM or swap one in?
Two shortcuts get suggested constantly, and both are worse than the surgical reconfiguration.
Cloning a US truck's BCM and changing the VIN. A full BCM clone copies more than the lighting configuration — it brings the donor truck's anti-theft/immobilizer data and its entire option coding. On these trucks the BCM is married to the engine controller and the keys for theft deterrence; drop in a donor's data and change the VIN, and the theft secret no longer matches your truck. The result is a security fault and often a crank-no-start until a theft relearn is performed and the modules are re-synced. You also inherit the donor's trim and feature coding, which produces phantom faults when it does not match your actual truck. All of that, just to flip one regional lighting flag.
Swapping in a used US-market BCM. Same problems, plus you now have to program the used module to your VIN anyway, and a used Global-A BCM still needs setup and theft relearn to work in your truck. You have added hardware cost and a relearn procedure to accomplish what a configuration change does cleanly.
The reconfiguration route keeps your truck's own VIN, your own anti-theft marriage, and your own option coding intact. It changes the lighting behavior and nothing else. That is why it is the correct fix and the other two are traps.
One tune, many features
Because the BCM reconfiguration is licensed and performed per VIN and the module holds hundreds of parameters, the DRL/US-spec change is rarely the only thing worth doing while the module is on the bench. - DRL disable or remap — turn them off entirely, or remap them to the front turn signals or fog lamps for a different look.
- Add factory remote start to trucks that did not come with it, where the build supports it.

Programming enables a feature; the physical wiring and hardware still have to be present for anything that drives a lamp, seat, or motor. When a feature also needs a cluster indicator turned on, that can be handled with a separate cluster step — which pairs naturally if you are already upgrading the gauges. Every part of this is a bench job — you ship a module, not the truck. The sequence is deliberately simple:
- Verify first. Text or email us your VIN and the exact list of features you want, and we confirm coverage for your specific build before you ship anything. Re-imported trucks sometimes carry option combinations worth checking up front.
- Provide proof of ownership. Reconfiguring vehicle systems requires documentation that the truck is yours — registration or title matching the VIN. This is a firm requirement, not a formality, and it is standard for any module or security-adjacent work.
- Remove and ship the BCM. Once verified, pull the Body Control Module and ship it to the lab. Pack it in an anti-static bag inside a padded box.
- Bench read and archive. On arrival we power the module on a regulated bench supply and read the existing configuration before any change, so there is always a known-good starting point.
- Reconfigure. We revert the lighting to US-spec and apply any other features you selected, preserving all factory coding you did not ask to change.

Is disabling DRL legal in the US?
For a US-registered vehicle, daytime running lamps are optional under FMVSS 108, so configuring a truck to allow them off is a legitimate owner choice. Two honest caveats. First, if the truck will ever be operated or re-registered in Canada, DRL is mandatory there under CMVSS 108 and a US-spec conversion would put it out of compliance — so this conversion is for trucks that are staying in the US. Second, this is a lighting-behavior change only; it does not alter your headlamps, high beams, or any other safety function, and you keep full manual control of the truck's lighting. As with any of our work, proof of ownership is required, and we decline anything that does not look like the owner's own vehicle.

Will reflashing my BCM to stock turn the DRL off?
