Honest answer: here's exactly what this service fixes — and what it doesn't.

Fixes:

  • No-start where the injectors are not being fired
  • A persistent dead miss on one or more cylinders that follows the module, not the injector
  • Rough running or a truck operating on a partial set of cylinders
  • Stored injector-circuit or injector-driver codes traced to the FICM
  • Lost communication with the FICM (U0105) where wiring and power check out

Won't fix:

  • Mechanically failed injectors — the LB7 in particular is known for injector failure, and a bad injector is not a module fault
  • Fuel supply problems: lift pump, CP3, filters, air in the system, low rail pressure
  • Wiring, connector and ground faults between the FICM and the injectors
  • Mechanical engine faults — compression, timing, glow-plug system
  • A module with damage beyond economical repair — we tell you before charging
  • Emissions defeat of any kind. We do not offer DPF, EGR or DEF deletes and will not modify a module to disable emissions equipment.

A stored code is evidence, not a verdict. Every code below can also be set by wiring, connectors, grounds, power supply, or the component the module is trying to drive. U0105

Lost communication with the Fuel Injection Control Module.

Does not prove: Also set by a broken or corroded harness, a bad ground, or loss of power to the module. Confirm the FICM is actually powered and its connector is clean before concluding the module is dead.

P0611

Fuel Injector Control Module performance.

Does not prove: Points at the module's performance, not automatically at a failed board. Supply voltage and grounds influence this code, and so does an injector circuit loading the driver abnormally.

P062D

Fuel injector driver circuit performance, bank 1.

Does not prove: A shorted or failing injector on that bank can produce this code with a perfectly healthy driver. Injector resistance and the harness need ruling out first.

P062E

Fuel injector driver circuit performance, bank 2.

Does not prove: Same qualification as P062D — a driver fault and a failed injector on that bank look alike from the scan tool.

P0201-P0208

Injector circuit, cylinders 1 through 8.

Does not prove: A single-cylinder code most often means that injector or its wiring. Multiple codes across a bank are what start pointing at the driver side rather than the injectors.

    Intake and visual inspection

    Your module is logged against your order, photographed as received, and opened. We look for the things that decide whether a repair is even sensible: liquid ingress, corrosion tracking, previous repair attempts, physical damage to the connector or housing, and burnt or lifted components.

    Power-up and communication test

    The module is powered on a bench harness and we confirm whether it comes up and communicates at all. A module that will not respond and one that responds but misbehaves are two different faults, and this is the step that separates them.

    Fault localisation under load

    We test the sections that actually fail on these modules rather than guessing from the code you arrived with — supply rails, driver outputs, and the circuits feeding them, measured with the module doing work rather than sitting idle. Intermittent faults get thermal cycling, because a joint that reads fine cold is exactly the joint that opens hot.

  4. 4

    Component-level repair

    Failed components are replaced and weak or cracked joints reworked. We repair the board you sent — this is not a swap-and-return. If a fault traces to something beyond economical repair, work stops here and you hear about it before anything is charged.

    Data preservation and verification

    Where the repair touches memory or requires a programming step, your existing calibration and learned data are read first and restored afterwards, so the module goes back configured to your truck rather than blank.

    Bench verification and return

    The repaired module is retested on the bench, including the specific function that failed, and thermally cycled again before it is signed off. It ships back in protective packaging with tracking, at the return speed you chose at checkout.

It is already married to your truck

Your module carries your VIN, your calibration, and the values it has learned over its life. Repairing it keeps every one of those. A donor module carries someone else's, which is why used units so often need a programming session before the truck will run properly — an extra step, an extra cost, and an extra thing to go wrong.

A used module is the same age as yours

The realistic alternative to repairing a fifteen-year-old module is a fifteen-year-old module out of another truck, with an unknown service history and the same components approaching the same end of life. Repairing yours targets the part that actually failed instead of rolling the dice on someone else's.

The failure is usually smaller than the part

These modules do not generally fail as a whole. They fail at a driver, a supply section, or a set of joints — a repairable area on an otherwise sound board. Replacing the entire module to fix that is the most expensive way to solve a small problem.

You find out before you commit

We inspect and test before we repair, and if a board is beyond economical recovery we tell you rather than doing the work anyway. You are never charged for a repair we cannot deliver, which is not a promise a salvage-yard module comes with.

LB7 injectors and the FICM are different problems — do not pay to fix the wrong one

The LB7 has a genuine reputation for injector failure, and that reputation causes real money to get spent in the wrong place in both directions. A dead miss can be an injector. It can equally be the driver that fires that injector. The distinguishing evidence is usually the pattern: a single cylinder that stays dead points at the injector or its wiring, while a whole bank going down, or a fault that comes and goes with underhood temperature, points at the module. How do I know whether it is the FICM or an injector?
The pattern is the best clue you have before anything comes off the truck. One cylinder that is consistently dead usually points at that injector or its wiring. A whole bank dropping out, or a miss that appears only once the engine bay is hot, points at the driver side — the module. Balance-rate data helps a lot, and so does whether the fault ever clears on its own. Text us the codes and what you are seeing before you order; we would rather talk you out of a shipment than take money for the wrong repair.
Does my truck even have a separate FICM?
LB7 (2001-2004) and LLY (2004.5-2005) trucks do. From the LBZ onward GM moved the injector drivers inside the ECM, so those trucks do not have a separate FICM to repair — an injector-driver fault there is an ECM job. The 2006 model year is the one to be careful with, because early builds are LLY and later builds are LBZ. Send us your VIN and we will tell you which one you have.
Will I get my own module back?
Yes. This is a repair, not an exchange. Your module is opened, repaired and returned to you with its data and configuration intact, which is the main reason to repair rather than replace — there is nothing to reprogram because it is still the module your truck already knows.
How long does the whole thing take?
Typically 3-5 business days on the bench once your module arrives, plus transit each way. This is board-level work with load testing and thermal cycling, not a plug-in reflash, so it is not a same-day service. Pick a faster return speed at checkout if downtime matters — the bench time stays the same but the trip home gets shorter.
What if my module cannot be repaired?
We inspect and test before we do any repair work. If the board is beyond economical recovery — severe liquid damage, extensive corrosion, or damage to areas that cannot be reliably rebuilt — we stop, tell you what we found, and you are not charged for a repair we cannot deliver. You get the module back if you want it.
Do you do DPF, EGR or DEF deletes while it is on the bench?
No. We do not offer emissions deletes or defeats of any kind on any platform, and we will not modify a module to disable emissions equipment. This service repairs the hardware failure that stops your truck running properly; it does not change what the truck is certified to do.
Do I need to send the ECM too?
Not for this service. Send the FICM by itself. If your symptoms or codes suggest the ECM is also involved we will tell you after testing rather than asking you to ship extra hardware speculatively.
My truck is a work truck and I cannot have it down for a week. What are my options?
Two things help. Pick UPS 2-Day or overnight for the return leg at checkout so the trip home is a day rather than most of a week. And text us before you pull the module — if the evidence points at an injector or the harness instead, you have saved yourself the entire round trip.
Does a repaired module need programming afterwards?
In most cases no. It is still your module with your VIN and calibration, so the truck recognises it exactly as before. If a specific repair requires a programming step, we read your existing data first and restore it, so the module goes back configured to your truck rather than blank.
Is there a warranty on the repair?
Yes — the same 6-month programming and workmanship warranty that covers our other bench services, and it covers the repair we performed. It does not extend to a different section of the board failing later, or to faults elsewhere on the truck that were never part of the repair. We will always tell you which of those we think you are looking at.
Can a shop send these in on behalf of a customer?
Yes, and a good share of our diesel work comes from shops. Ship it with the shop as the return address, put the job number on the note, and we will text updates to whichever number you give us. The diagnostic notes from a shop are usually better than what we get direct, which makes the bench work faster.
Where does the work actually happen?
At our own bench in Arlington, Texas. Auto Module Lab is a mail-in electronics lab — we do not have branches in other cities and we do not sub the work out. Modules come to Arlington from all fifty states and go back out from here.
