What diesel ECM and FICM repair costs in 2026

Every one of those four is a repair of the module you already own. It is not a reflash, not a tune, not a replacement part, and not a programming service. Your controller is opened, inspected, tested under load, repaired at component level where it has failed, and verified on the bench before it goes back in the box.

Repair is a different purchase from replacement

This is the distinction that decides the cost of the whole job, and it is the one most quotes blur.

When a diesel engine controller fails, you have three routes. You can repair the original. You can buy a used one from a salvage yard or a core seller. Or you can buy a new one from the dealer. Only the first of those three ends with a module that already belongs to your truck.

Repairing your original keeps three things you cannot buy. It keeps your VIN, which the truck checks. It keeps your calibration — the exact software and parameter set that matches your engine, transmission, axle ratio and emissions family. And on the platforms that use one, it keeps the security relationship between the controller and the rest of the vehicle. A repaired module is not a new part being introduced to a stranger. It is the same part coming home.

A used controller keeps none of it. It arrives holding another truck's identity. Before it will run your engine it has to be programmed, and depending on the platform that can mean a calibration flash, a VIN write, a security handshake, or all three. That is a second bill on top of the part, and it is the bill that turns a cheap salvage-yard find into an expensive afternoon. A new dealer controller keeps none of it either, and costs the most up front. It still needs programming, it still needs the VIN, and on many diesel platforms that programming is dealer-tool work.

So the honest comparison is never "repair price versus part price." It is repair price versus part price plus programming plus the risk that the donor is as tired as the module you took out. Why the Duramax generations matter so much here

The single most useful thing a Duramax owner can know is where the injector drivers live, because it decides which module fails and which service you need.

On the 2001-2004 LB7 and 2004.5-2005 LLY, the injector drivers sit in a separate Fuel Injection Control Module, mounted on the engine, driver side, apart from the ECM. It is a hard place to live. The FICM is generating high-voltage, high-current pulses to fire the injectors, it is doing it thousands of times a minute, and it is doing it bolted to a hot engine. When its driver stages or its internal power supply give up, the truck either will not start or runs on a partial set of cylinders with a dead miss that follows the module rather than the injector.

On the 2006-2007 LLY and LBZ, GM moved the drivers inside the ECM. The E35 now does both jobs. That is tidier packaging, and it means a driver failure that used to kill a $500 side module now kills the engine computer. Symptoms change accordingly: no communication with a scan tool, a truck that will not start with nothing commanded, or a module that has simply gone dark.

On the 2007.5-2010 LMM, the E35B continues the same architecture with emissions-era hardware and its own calibration.

Two model years are split builds, and both of them cause shipping mistakes. 2006 can be an early-build LLY with a separate FICM or a later-build LBZ with the drivers in the ECM. 2007 can be LBZ or LMM depending on build date. The truck's badge does not tell you and the model year alone does not tell you. This is why we do not publish an interchange table. That check costs nothing and takes minutes, and it is the cheapest step in the entire job.

The Ford side is simpler but scoped deliberately narrow. We bench the 2011-2016 Super Duty 6.7L PCM because that is what we bench. If you have a 2017 or later truck, ask first — we would rather tell you no than accept a module we cannot properly service. The 6.0L Power Stroke FICM is a different module and a different service entirely.

What actually fails inside a diesel engine controller

Diesel controllers rarely fail as a whole. They fail at a section. That is the entire economic argument for board-level repair: replacing the complete module to fix one failed area is the most expensive way to solve a small problem.

Injector driver output stages. These switch high current into inductive loads, over and over, hot. They fail open or shorted, and the truck loses the cylinders that driver was feeding.

The internal power-supply section. Every controller steps vehicle voltage down to the rails its processor and drivers need. Those supply components are among the most heat-stressed parts on the board, and they take the brunt of any charging-system abuse.

Solder joints. This is the quiet one. A diesel engine bay heats and cools through a huge range every single day, and every thermal cycle works the joints between a component and the board. Eventually a joint cracks. It conducts cold and opens warm, which is exactly why the truck runs fine in the morning and acts up after an hour of towing. Cracked joints are why we thermal-cycle intermittent modules rather than declaring a board good because it powered up on the bench.

Connector-interface corrosion. Where the harness meets the board, moisture and road salt find their way in. When the damage stops short of the board's repairable area, this is recoverable.

Communication-side faults. The module is alive internally but will not talk on the bus, so a scan tool reports nothing and every diagnosis downstream is guesswork.

What changes the price

The four prices above are flat. They do not scale with how long the repair takes or how many components the board needs. What actually varies is whether the job stays a repair at all.

Whether the board is economically recoverable. Some modules arrive beyond repair — severe water immersion, fire damage, a previous attempt that lifted pads and traces, physical damage to the processor area. We inspect and test before we repair, and if a board cannot be economically recovered we tell you rather than doing the work anyway. You are not charged for a repair we cannot deliver.

Whether the fault is actually in the module. A meaningful share of the controllers we are asked to quote are healthy. The fault is upstream: a failed injector, a lift pump, a chafed harness, a corroded ground. Those are not module repairs, and we say so.

Whether the vehicle killed the module for a reason. If the charging system is out of specification, or a ground strap is corroded, or the truck has been jump-started hard, the replacement or repaired unit is on the same path to failure. Whether you actually need repair or programming. If your module is physically fine and the problem is that you have sourced a donor that needs to be made yours, that is cloning or programming work, not board repair, and it is priced differently. The scale of what these controllers are managing

It is worth understanding why a diesel powertrain controller is a genuinely hard piece of hardware, because it explains both the failure modes and why replacing one is not a simple swap.

Standardized onboard diagnostics have been mandatory on light-duty vehicles sold in the United States since the 1996 model year — three decades of regulation administered through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Every controller since then has been legally required to monitor its own emissions-relevant systems and report faults, and diesel platforms carry a heavier monitoring burden than gasoline ones because of aftertreatment.

The reprogramming protocols that make any non-dealer bench or pass-thru work possible were standardized through SAE International, whose pass-thru reprogramming standard is now more than 20 years old and underpins essentially every independent flash performed in North America.

The trucks themselves are not a niche. Pickups and SUVs have accounted for roughly three-quarters of new light-vehicle sales in the United States in recent years, a shift covered continuously by outlets including Car and Driver, and the average age of vehicles on American roads now sits at roughly 12 to 13 years according to industry data regularly reported by J.D. Power. A 2008 LMM or a 2013 Super Duty is not an old truck by that standard. It is an average one, and it is exactly the age where heat-cycled solder joints start coming due.

Vehicle safety and defect oversight runs through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and the diesel fuel-injection hardware itself on these platforms comes largely from Bosch, whose EDC16-family controllers sit behind the Duramax E35 and E35B.

How the mail-in process actually works

Nothing about this is local. The whole point is that the truck stays in your driveway or on your shop's lift while the module travels.

First, you confirm the part. Text us a photo of the module's label with your VIN. We confirm whether it is the module we bench, and on 2006 and 2007 Duramax trucks we confirm which build you actually have. This step is free and it prevents the single most common wasted shipment.

Then you order and ship. You choose your return speed at checkout, which is where the $24.95-and-up return shipping is selected. Both mail-in addresses are published on the service page — a USPS box and a street-addressed form for UPS and FedEx, because couriers will not deliver to a USPS PO Box.

We evaluate before we repair. The module is opened, inspected and tested under load, not simply powered up. Intermittent faults get thermal cycling so a joint that only fails warm is caught rather than missed.

We repair at component level. The failed driver stage, supply section, joint or trace is repaired. Your data, calibration and configuration are preserved through the work.

How to pack a diesel controller

A module that arrives damaged is a wasted week, and diesel controllers are heavy enough to do real harm to themselves inside a loose box.

Put the module in an antistatic bag first. If you do not have one, wrap it in paper before anything plastic — never in bubble wrap directly against the connector pins. Then immobilize it. The module must not move inside the box at all, because a half-kilo aluminum-cased controller rattling around for three days will break its own connector housings. Use a box with real wall strength and at least two inches of dense packing on every side.

Do not send the harness, brackets, or the entire donor engine loom unless we have asked for them. Do include a note inside the box with your name and order number, because labels come off in transit.

When repair is the wrong answer

We would rather turn work away than take a module we cannot help.

Repair is the wrong answer when the module is not at fault, and that is more common than people expect. Mechanically failed injectors — the LB7 in particular has a long-documented reputation for them — are not a module fault. Neither is a lift pump, a CP3, a plugged filter, air in the fuel system, or low rail pressure. Wiring, connector and ground faults between the controller and the injectors will produce driver-circuit codes without the driver being bad.

Repair is also the wrong answer when the board is genuinely gone. A module that has been submerged, burned, or previously opened by someone who lifted pads and traces may simply not be economically recoverable, and in that case the right move is a donor module plus programming.

And there is one thing we will not do at any price. We do not offer emissions deletes of any kind. No DPF, no EGR, no DEF, no aftertreatment defeat, and we will not modify a controller to disable emissions equipment. That is true on every diesel platform we service, and it is not negotiable.
