Volvo CEM Cloning & Data Transfer — Mail-In Bench Central Electronic Module Service

Water got into the CEM and now the car won't start, won't communicate, or won't recognize the key? Mail in your original plus a matched donor and we clone the full dataset — VIN, immobilizer, key count, and config — onto the replacement on the bench so it drops in.

What You Get

  • Your original CEM's full dataset cloned onto a hardware-matched donor — VIN, immobilizer, key count, and config, where supported
  • All-keys-lost handled where the platform supports it — immobilizer read and a key added
  • Bench read + verify of both units before anything is written
  • Factory immobilizer kept fully active (this is not an immo delete)
  • Bench communication tested with a stable, regulated power supply
  • Clear install notes — including whether the engine ECU is needed for a P3 sync
  • Modules returned with tracking — return-shipping speed your choice at checkout

Will This Fix My Problem?

Honest answer: here's exactly what this service fixes — and what it doesn't.

Fixes:

  • No-start / no-comms after the CEM corroded from water intrusion
  • Car electrically dead or dropping communication with a failed CEM
  • Key not recognized and immobilizer active after a CEM fault
  • You installed a used donor CEM and the car won't start or match
  • You want your VIN, keys, and config carried onto healthy used hardware
  • All-keys-lost on a supported platform where the immobilizer can be read

Won't fix:

  • Does not include the donor CEM — you source a platform- and part-number-matched used unit (we verify the numbers first)
  • Does not clone a completely dead or unreadable original — that CEM cannot be read
  • Does not do an on-car VIDA dealer session — this is bench data transfer
  • Does not repair water/corrosion damage to the vehicle harness, grounds, or connectors
  • Does not fix no-starts caused by fuel, spark, battery, starter, or wiring faults
  • Does not add keys where the CEM is dead or the platform is unsupported for AKL
  • Does not bypass proof of ownership for immobilizer or key work
  • Does not cover the rear body module — see our Volvo REM clone service
  • Does not cover the engine ECU — see our Volvo Denso ECU clone service (the Denso engine ECU pairs to this CEM)

Water in the CEM — clone it out before it's gone

Volvo CEMs corrode from water that tracks down from the windshield and A-pillar, and once the board is far enough gone it can no longer be read — the identity, immobilizer, and key data are lost with it. If your CEM still powers up and communicates, cloning it onto a matched donor now carries your VIN, keys, and config onto healthy hardware while it's still possible. Platform matters: the early P2 (1999–2004) and late P2 (2005–2014) cars use different CEM hardware, and early P3 cars from 2007–2010 use the Delphi flat-end-connector variant — we identify yours by VIN before you buy a donor. A donor must match your platform and part number, a dead original cannot be cloned, and on P3 all-keys-lost we usually need the engine ECU too (see our Volvo Denso ECU clone service if the engine computer is also being replaced). Proof of ownership is required for any immobilizer or key work.

Shipping Instructions

These details are also emailed to you the moment your payment clears.

Verify first: text or email us your VIN and CEM part number off the module label (and proof of ownership for any key / immobilizer work) and we confirm your platform, the donor match, and whether the engine ECU is also needed before you ship. Once verified, remove the CEM (and the donor, if cloning) and ship it to PO Box 120241, Arlington TX 76012 if you ship USPS — or 1009 Oakwood Ln # 120241, Arlington TX 76012 if you ship UPS or FedEx (UPS and FedEx cannot deliver to a PO Box). We clone the data on the bench, test communication, and ship it back via the return option you pick at checkout (Standard $29.95, UPS 2-Day $54.95, or UPS overnight $94.95).

What to include in your box

  • Your original CEM AND the hardware-matched donor CEM (if cloning)
  • Year, make, model, and engine (e.g. 2011 Volvo XC60 3.2L)
  • VIN of the vehicle
  • CEM part number off both case labels — we pre-verify the match
  • Whether this is a CEM swap, all-keys-lost, or a used-CEM match
  • The engine ECU too if a technician flags a P3 all-keys-lost sync
  • Proof of ownership (title, registration, or bill of sale)
  • A clear photo of the CEM part-number label, plus your name, return address, and phone

Frequently Asked

Still have a question? Text us — replies in minutes.

What does the CEM do and why does a bad one stop the car?
The CEM (Central Electronic Module) is Volvo's central body computer — it holds the VIN, the immobilizer / drive-authorization data, the vehicle configuration, and the stored key data, and it gateways communication between modules. When it fails, the car can go no-start, drop communication entirely, or stop recognizing the key. Cloning your data onto a healthy donor restores the identity a replacement needs to work.
My CEM got water damage — can you still clone it?
If it still powers up and can be read, usually yes — and sooner is better, because corrosion from windshield/A-pillar water intrusion eventually kills the board past the point of reading, and the identity and key data go with it. A completely dead or unreadable original cannot be cloned. Send us photos and your VIN and we'll tell you whether yours is still readable before you ship.
Which Volvo platforms do you cover?
P1 (S40, V50, C30, C70), P2 (S60, S80, V70, XC70, XC90), and P3 (S60, S80, V70, XC70, XC60, XC90). Early P3 uses a Delphi flat-end-connector CEM variant, which we verify case-by-case. A technician confirms your exact CEM by VIN and module label before you ship.
How do I pick a compatible donor CEM?
The donor must match your platform and CEM part number — same part number is the goal. A same-year, same-model car is not automatically a match. Send us your original's label photo and the donor listing before you buy and we confirm the match first.
Can you do all-keys-lost on a Volvo?
Where the platform supports it, yes — we read the immobilizer from the CEM and add a key. On P3 all-keys-lost we usually want the engine ECU shipped in too, so the immobilizer relationship can be synced. It is not offered where the CEM is dead or unreadable. Proof of ownership is required before any key or immobilizer work.
Is this the same as a dealer VIDA session?
No. This is bench data transfer — we read your original CEM and write its identity, immobilizer, key, and config data onto a matched donor on the bench. It is not an on-car VIDA dealer programming session, and it does not remove or disable the immobilizer.
Will this fix a no-start that isn't the CEM?
No. Cloning restores the CEM's identity and keys, but it cannot repair a no-start caused by fuel, spark, battery, starter, wiring, grounds, or a corroded harness. If the CEM checks out, those must be diagnosed and repaired separately.
How much is it, and is it a mail-in service?
It is $250 flat and a fast turnaround once your verified modules arrive. Yes, it is mail-in only — after we verify your platform and donor match by VIN and module label, you ship the CEM (and donor, if cloning) to Auto Module Lab. We clone it on the bench, test communication, and ship it back with tracking. You choose your return-shipping speed at checkout — Standard $29.95, UPS 2-Day $54.95, or UPS overnight $94.95.
