Text Before You Buy

Volvo engine ECUs from BOTH suppliers — Denso (part numbers like 279700-xxxx, Drive-E and earlier applications) and Bosch ME9.0 on the P1 platform T5 cars (S40, V50, C30, C70, roughly 2004-2013), plus related Bosch ME units where supported. Donor must match part number and supplier; the ECU carries an immobilizer relationship with the CEM. Verified by VIN + module label before you ship.

Will This Fix My Problem?

Honest answer: here's exactly what this service fixes — and what it doesn't.

Fixes:

  • Cranks-no-start after installing a used Denso or Bosch ME9.0 engine ECU (immobilizer mismatch)
  • Dead or no-communication engine ECU and a dealer replacement quote you don't like
  • You want your original ECU's immobilizer and VIN data on healthy used hardware
  • Replacement Denso or Bosch ME9.0 ECU installed but never matched to the vehicle
  • S40, V50, C30 or C70 T5 with a failed Bosch ME9.0 and a donor already on the shelf
  • Immobilizer active / security fault after an ECU swap
  • You need the ECU matched to the car with the factory immobilizer intact

Won't fix:

  • Does not include the donor ECU — you source a part-number-matched used unit (we verify the numbers first)
  • Does not cross suppliers — a Denso original cannot be cloned onto a Bosch donor, or the reverse
  • Does not clone a completely dead or unreadable original — the identity is read from it
  • Does not cover the CEM, REM, or climate module — those are separate Volvo clone services
  • Does not remove or disable the immobilizer — this is a match, not a delete
  • Does not do an on-car dealer programming session — this is bench data transfer
  • Does not fix no-starts caused by fuel, spark, battery, starter, wiring, or grounds
  • Does not repair internal engine or sensor faults
  • Does not bypass proof of ownership for immobilizer work

A used engine ECU cranks but won't start — here's why

Volvo's engine ECU is paired to the CEM immobilizer — and that is true whether your car runs a Denso unit or a Bosch ME9.0 on the P1 platform (S40, V50, C30, C70 T5). A used ECU from another car sees a stranger and blocks the start, so the engine cranks but never fires. Cloning your original ECU's immobilizer and VIN data onto the matched donor restores that pairing so the replacement runs plug-and-play, with the factory immobilizer still active. The donor must match your part number AND your supplier — Denso to Denso, Bosch to Bosch — a completely dead or unreadable original cannot be cloned because the identity is read from it, and this is a match, not an immobilizer delete. Proof of ownership is required, and a technician verifies your ECU and the donor by VIN and module label before you ship.

Shipping Instructions

These details are also emailed to you the moment your payment clears.

Verify first: text or email us your VIN and Denso ECU part number off the module label (and proof of ownership) and we confirm the donor match and immobilizer path before you ship anything. Once verified, remove the ECU (and the donor, if cloning) and ship it to PO Box 120241, Arlington TX 76012 if you ship USPS — or 1009 Oakwood Ln # 120241, Arlington TX 76012 if you ship UPS or FedEx (UPS and FedEx cannot deliver to a PO Box). We clone the data on the bench, test communication, and ship it back via the return option you pick at checkout (Standard $29.95, UPS 2-Day $54.95, or UPS overnight $94.95).

What to include in your box

  • Your original engine ECU AND the part-number-matched donor ECU (if cloning)
  • Year, make, model, and engine (e.g. 2016 Volvo XC60 2.0L Drive-E, or 2008 Volvo C30 T5)
  • VIN of the vehicle
  • ECU part number off both case labels — Denso (e.g. 279700-xxxx) or Bosch ME9.0 — we pre-verify the match
  • What is wrong now: dead ECU, no-comms, or cranks-no-start after a used-ECU swap
  • Whether the original still powers up and communicates
  • Proof of ownership (title, registration, or bill of sale)
  • A clear photo of the ECU part-number label, plus your name, return address, and phone

Frequently Asked

Still have a question? Text us — replies in minutes.

Why won't a used Volvo engine ECU start my car?
The engine ECU carries an immobilizer relationship with the CEM — Denso and Bosch alike — so a used ECU from another car has the wrong identity and the immobilizer blocks the start: the engine cranks but won't fire. Cloning your original ECU's immobilizer and VIN data onto that donor restores the match so it runs plug-and-play, with security intact.
Which Volvo ECUs does this cover?
Both suppliers Volvo used. Denso engine ECUs with part numbers in the 279700-xxxx family, including Drive-E and earlier Denso applications; and Bosch ME9.0 engine ECUs on the P1 platform T5 cars — S40, V50, C30 and C70, roughly 2004-2013, in 2.4i and T5 five-cylinder form — plus related Bosch ME units on the same family where supported. A technician confirms your exact ECU by VIN and module label before you ship, and verifies that your donor is a part-number match.
Do you clone the Bosch ME9.0 in an S40, V50, C30 or C70 T5?
Yes — that is a covered application on this same page, at the same $250 flat price. Those P1 platform cars run a Bosch ME9.0 engine ECU rather than a Denso unit, and it is immobilizer-paired to the CEM the same way, so a junkyard ME9.0 will crank and not start until its identity matches your car. Send the original plus a part-number-matched Bosch donor and we transfer the data on the bench.
Can I use a Bosch donor for a Denso original (or the reverse)?
No. The clone has to stay within the same supplier and the same part number — Denso to Denso, Bosch to Bosch, matching hardware revision. Different hardware cannot accept the other's data. Send us your original's label photo and the donor listing and we confirm the match before you buy.
Is this an immobilizer delete?
No. This is a match, not a delete — we clone your immobilizer and VIN data onto the donor so the factory immobilizer stays fully active and the replacement ECU pairs to your CEM. If you were looking to remove the immobilizer, that is a different service and not what this does.
My original ECU is dead — can you still clone it?
Only if it still powers up and can be read — the immobilizer and VIN identity are read from your original, so a completely dead or unreadable unit cannot be cloned. Send us photos, your VIN, and the part number and we'll tell you whether yours is still readable before you ship.
How do I pick a compatible donor ECU?
Match the ECU part number on your original's case label as closely as possible — same supplier, same part number is the goal, whether that is a Denso 279700-xxxx or a Bosch ME9.0. Send us your original's label photo and the donor listing before you buy and we confirm the match first, free, so you don't buy the wrong unit.
What about my CEM, REM, or climate module?
Those are separate services on their own pages — the Volvo CEM clone, the Volvo REM clone, and the Volvo CCM climate module clone. This page is the engine ECU only. If you are not sure which module is actually at fault, send your VIN and symptoms and we will point you at the right one before you ship anything.
Will this fix a no-start that isn't the immobilizer?
No. Cloning restores the ECU's identity and immobilizer match, but it cannot repair a no-start caused by fuel, spark, battery, starter, wiring, grounds, or internal engine or sensor faults. If the ECU checks out, those must be diagnosed and repaired separately.
Do I need proof of ownership?
Yes. Because this is immobilizer-related work, proof of ownership (title, registration, or bill of sale) is required before we begin. It keeps the service legitimate for your own vehicle, a purchased car, or a restoration project.
How much is it, and is it a mail-in service?
It is $250 flat and a fast turnaround once your verified modules arrive. Yes, it is mail-in only — after we verify the donor match by VIN and module label, you ship the ECU (and donor, if cloning) to Auto Module Lab. We clone it on the bench, test communication, and ship it back with tracking. You choose your return-shipping speed at checkout — Standard $29.95, UPS 2-Day $54.95, or UPS overnight $94.95.
