Those are our prices for the work itself. Every dealer or independent-shop figure quoted anywhere in this article is deliberately given as a range and labelled as typical or commonly reported, because those numbers genuinely swing by region, by chassis, and by how a shop bills diagnostic time.
Why a BMW quote lands in four figures
When a dealer hands you an estimate for "the CAS module" or "the FRM", that single number is three costs welded together, and you are not shown the seams.
The part. A new BMW module bought through the parts counter is priced as a dealer part. On a body or access module that is rarely a small number, and on an engine controller it can be the largest line on the invoice.
The labour. Someone has to get to the module. An FRM lives in the footwell behind trim. A CAS sits under the steering column area. A DME is comparatively accessible but still means bumper or cabin-filter-box disassembly on some chassis. That is billed at the shop's hourly rate whether the module turns out to be faulty or not.
The coding session. This is the part almost nobody itemises, and it is the part that actually requires specialist tooling. A replacement BMW module arrives knowing nothing. It has to be given the car's VIN, coded to the exact option content of that particular build, and — on anything with a security relationship — handed the ISN, the internal serial number that proves the engine controller and the access system are allowed to talk to each other.
Splitting those three costs apart is the entire reason mail-in bench work exists. You keep control of where the hardware comes from and who fits it. The specialist handles only the third piece, the one that needs the equipment.
The scale of the problem is not shrinking. The average light vehicle on American roads is now well over 12 years old according to fleet-age reporting compiled by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, which means an enormous number of E-chassis and early F-chassis BMWs are now deep into the age band where electronic modules start failing. BMW of North America has been delivering vehicles in roughly the 350,000-a-year range in recent years, and has for decades, so the installed base of cars needing exactly this kind of work is very large and growing older every year.
The modules, one at a time
CAS — Car Access System
The CAS is the immobilizer and access brain on E-chassis BMWs, broadly the mid-2000s through early-2010s era, and it exists in several generations from CAS1 through CAS4 and CAS4+. It stores the ISN, the key slots and their rolling counters, and the VIN. A CAS that has failed, been water-damaged, or lost its keys is the reason the car will crank but never start, or will not wake up at all.

FEM / BDC — the F and G chassis successor
From roughly 2013 onward the CAS function moved into the Front Electronic Module and the Body Domain Controller. Key programming on a healthy FEM or BDC on the bench is $150 through our FEM/BDC key programming service.
There is a second, more expensive FEM/BDC scenario, and it is worth knowing about before it happens to you. These modules have to be put into a service mode to be programmed, and a flash that is interrupted — by a voltage dip, a cable, or a tool that loses its nerve halfway through — can leave the module unresponsive and the entire car dead. That is bricked FEM/BDC recovery at $350, and the single most useful thing you can do if it happens is stop. Every additional retry with the same tool lowers the odds of a clean recovery.
FRM — the footwell module
The FRM controls exterior and interior lighting, and on many chassis the windows and mirrors too. Its failure signature is well known to anyone who has owned an E90 or E70: lights, windows and mirrors go dead together, and a scan tool cannot see the module at all.
The cause is usually not dramatic. These modules are sensitive to low system voltage during coding or during a battery change, and the microcontroller's internal flash can be left in a state the module cannot boot from. DME — the engine controller
Two distinct jobs live here and they price differently.
The first is the ISN relationship. A DME and the car's access system share an internal serial number, and a DME that does not carry the right one will let the engine crank and nothing else. Reading that value and matching a controller to the car is $250 — the DME ISN read and match service.
The second is a used donor DME on an F-chassis car, which is a heavier job because of how those controllers are locked, and that is $399 through our F-series used DME programming service. EWS — the pre-CAS immobilizer
On the older E-chassis cars the immobilizer function lived in a standalone EWS module. Key programming on the bench is $250 via our EWS key programming service.
There is also the option of removing the immobilizer relationship from the engine controller entirely, which is $250 and covered end to end in our DME EWS delete guide. That path exists for legitimate repair situations, off-road vehicles, and orphaned platforms where the original security hardware is simply gone. It requires proof of ownership, and it is not the default answer to a car that will not start — most of the time the correct fix is to repair the security relationship rather than remove it.
EGS — the transmission controller
Later BMW transmission controllers, particularly ZF 8HP units, carry an ISN of their own and cannot simply be swapped between cars. Cloning or ISN work on one of these is $300 through our EGS TCM ISN clone service.
ELV — the electric steering lock
The electric steering lock has an internal cycle counter, and when that counter reaches its limit the lock refuses to release even though the mechanism is physically fine. A counter reset is $250 via our ELV counter reset service.

What changes the price — six variables
Does your original module still read? This is the single biggest fork in the road. If your original can be read on the bench, its identity and configuration can be cloned onto a donor and the car behaves as though nothing changed. If it is genuinely dead, the donor has to be written and configured from a blank state, which is a different and sometimes longer job.
Is there a security relationship involved? Anything touching keys, the ISN, or the immobilizer costs more than a plain configuration job, because the work has to satisfy the car's security handshake rather than simply write a calibration.
Which generation of the module you have. CAS1 through CAS4+ are not one thing, and neither are FRM2, FRM3 and FRM3R. The generation determines what is realistic on the bench, and the part number on the module's own label is the only definitive answer.
Where the donor came from. A donor from a car of the same rough build era and option content is straightforward. A donor from a very different market or option configuration can need considerably more configuration work, and occasionally is not a viable donor at all.
Whether more than one module is involved. BMW security is a relationship, not a single component. Sometimes the honest answer is that the DME and the CAS both need to come in so they can be matched to each other on the bench.
How fast you need it back. The bench work itself is typically 24 hours. The variable that actually moves your total is which return shipping tier you pick.
Repair, clone, or replace
The cars I see that end up costing the most are the ones where somebody kept trying. A module that failed once is usually recoverable. A module that has had four different tools thrown at it, each one leaving something half-written, sometimes is not.

That is worth sitting with, because it is the cheapest advice in this article. Modern control modules are not fragile in the mechanical sense, but their flash memory only tolerates so many interrupted writes. If a coding attempt has already failed once, the correct next move is to stop and get the module read properly, not to try the same procedure again with a different cable.

What you actually ship
You send the module, not the car. Remove it, photograph the label so the part number is legible, and pack it so nothing can move inside the box. Static matters here — these are bare electronic assemblies once they leave the vehicle, and the handling precautions that NIST and the wider electronics industry publish for electrostatic discharge apply to a control module exactly as they apply to any other circuit board.

When it is not the module at all
A meaningful share of the modules that arrive here are electrically fine. Before you remove anything, rule out the boring causes, because they are far more common:
- Battery and charging system. A weak battery or a failing alternator produces exactly the symptoms people attribute to a dead module, and low voltage during any coding attempt is how healthy modules get bricked in the first place.
- Grounds and connectors. Corroded grounds and water in a connector produce intermittent, module-shaped faults.
- A recent battery replacement. Several BMW systems need registration or a relearn afterwards, and skipping it produces alarming but entirely reversible behaviour.
- A different module upstream. If a module has simply dropped off the bus, the fault can be the network or the gateway rather than the module itself.
Ownership, security, and what we will not do
Every job touching keys, the immobilizer, or any security function requires proof of ownership. That is not paperwork theatre. Roughly a million vehicles are stolen in the United States in a typical recent year according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, and insurance-loss research from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and its affiliated data institute has consistently found that vehicles with functioning engine immobilizers show materially lower theft-loss frequencies. The security system in your BMW is doing real work, and we treat it accordingly.
