What a Ram with all three lights on is telling you

A Ram pickup that lights the ABS lamp, the ESP/BAS lamp and the traction-control lamp at the same moment, switches those systems off and keeps braking normally on the pedal is reporting a failure in the controller that runs all three. On these trucks the anti-lock, stability, brake-assist and traction functions share one electronic control unit bolted to one hydraulic control unit, so an internal electronic fault takes every one of them down at once. That is a different pattern from a single wheel-speed sensor fault, which usually names a corner and may flicker with speed.

Which controller your truck carries, what fails inside it and what the fix costs all depend on the generation, and that is how this guide is organised. If you already know you have a 2013 to 2018 Ram 1500 and want the code-level detail, the Ram 1500 ABS module failure codes guide is the deeper companion for that truck. This page covers the whole Ram pickup line, the heavy-duty trucks included, and the decisions that are the same across all of them.

The scale is why it matters. Ram sold roughly 445,000 pickups in the United States in 2023 according to the Stellantis North America newsroom, and the average light vehicle on U.S. roads was about 12.6 years old in 2024 according to S&P Global Mobility. The fourth-generation trucks described below are now ten to fifteen years old, which is precisely the window in which an under-hood electronic module that has lived through a decade of heat, vibration and road salt gives up.

Which ABS module your Ram carries

Ram changed brake electronics with each generation, and the label on the controller is the only authority. These are the common cases.

Third generation, 2002 to 2008 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500. Older anti-lock units with less integration and, on many trucks, rear-wheel-only or four-wheel ABS without stability control. The electronics separate from the hydraulic block and the failures are the classic ones for their era: solder fatigue at the pin field, relay and pump-driver faults. We confirm the unit from the label before quoting, because more than one supplier appears across these years.

Fourth generation, 2009 to 2018 Ram 1500, plus the Ram 1500 Classic. The volume generation, and not one supplier: rebuilders list a TRW EBC-440 controller on the 2009 to 2012 trucks, and the 2014 and 2015 trucks that reached our bench carried ATE (Continental) units labeled 68193650AD and 68193650AE. The combined electro-hydraulic unit runs ABS, stability, brake assist and traction on one processor. Its electronic failures set C2116 and U0121 and are the most common Ram ABS job we see. The 2013 to 2018 trucks are the heart of it.

Heavy duty, 2010 to 2018 Ram 2500 and 3500. Rebuilders list the TRW EBC-440 across the heavy-duty trucks from 2006 to 2018, with their own part numbers and calibrations for the heavier axle and the larger brakes. The failure pattern on the bench is the same: driver stages, pin-field solder and memory. Confirm by label, because the HD part numbers do not interchange with the 1500 and a used 1500 unit is not a substitute. On a 2017 or 2018 heavy-duty truck, check recall 24V-896 with a Ram dealer first: the hydraulic control unit can fail, and dealers replace it or its motor free.

A correction from our bench (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide called every 2009 to 2018 truck a Bosch unit. The 2014 and 2015 Ram 1500 modules we have repaired were ATE units, and rebuilders list a TRW EBC-440 on the 2006 to 2012 trucks and the heavy-duty trucks, so read the label on yours before you buy anything or ship it.

Fifth generation, 2019 and newer Ram 1500 (DT) and the heavy-duty trucks that followed. A newer brake-electronics architecture with more integration and more configuration sensitivity. The controllers on these trucks are still electro-hydraulic units with a separable electronic side on most applications, and the bench approach is the same once the label confirms the family, but we do not assume anything from the model year. Send the label photo.

The deciding step on every generation is identical: photograph the label on the electronic controller, send it with the VIN, and we tell you which family you have, whether it separates from the block, and what the repair involves before you remove it. Our ABS module types identification guide explains how to read that label and what each family is known for.

The codes that name the module, and the ones that do not

Read the ABS controller's own codes. A basic code reader that only sees powertrain codes will show you nothing, and the engine computer's U-codes only tell you the ABS module has gone quiet, not why.

Code What it means On a Ram it is usually
C2116 ABS pump-motor supply voltage low The pump-motor driver or supply circuit inside the controller; occasionally a mechanically bad pump motor, which the bench separates
U0121 Lost communication with the ABS module The controller has dropped off the bus, most often a complete internal electronic failure; prove power and ground at the connector first
C2200 ABS module internal failure An internal driver stage or memory fault; no sensor or wire outside the unit sets this
C2100 Controller supply voltage out of range Battery, charging system or a module ground; not a module verdict on its own
C1xxx codes naming a wheel Wheel-speed sensor circuit or signal at one corner A sensor, tone ring, hub or harness at that wheel, not the module
U0415 or similar invalid-data codes from other modules Other controllers rejecting ABS data A companion to U0121; they clear when the module is fixed

The pattern is what matters. A solid C2116 or C2200 with good battery voltage and good grounds points inside the controller. A U0121 with no power at the module connector points at the fuse, the harness or a ground, not the module. A code naming one wheel points outward. The ABS and traction light symptom guide walks the general version of that logic; on a Ram the codes above are the ones that come up.

Why a towing truck raises the stakes

A Ram is not a commuter car with a convenience feature switched off. On the heavy-duty trucks and on any 1500 that tows, the stability and brake-assist functions are part of how the truck controls a trailer, and the integrated trailer brake controller on the trucks that have it relies on brake-system data from the same controller. Owners commonly report the trailer brake function disabled or faulted alongside the three ABS lights, which turns a dash-light problem into a cannot-tow problem. Ram rates its heavy-duty trucks to tow well over 30,000 pounds in their highest configurations according to Ram Trucks, and nobody should be pulling a load like that with anti-lock and stability control dead.

The safety case is not abstract. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety estimates that electronic stability control cuts the risk of a fatal single-vehicle crash by roughly half, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has required it on every new light vehicle since the 2012 model year. On a Ram, every one of those functions runs on the controller this guide is about.

Before you condemn the module: the checks

Battery and charging. A weak battery or a charging fault sets supply-voltage codes and can drop the ABS module off the bus. Load-test the battery and check charging voltage before anything else; on a truck that sat all winter this is the cause more often than people expect.

Grounds and the connector. Check the module's ground and the main connector for green or white corrosion, pushed-back pins and water intrusion. Under-truck units on salted-road trucks earn this check twice.

Fuses and the module's supply. With U0121 stored, prove battery voltage at the module's supply pins with the key on. No supply means a fuse, a harness or a power-distribution problem, and no module repair fixes that.

Wheel-speed sensors and tone rings. With a scan tool that reads the ABS controller, watch the four live wheel speeds while rolling. One that reads zero, drops out or reads differently from the other three is a sensor, a tone ring or a hub, and on a lifted or re-tyred truck mismatched tyre sizes front to rear can also confuse the system.

The pump that will not stop. If you can hear the ABS pump running with the key off, or the battery has been flat more than once, the pump-motor relay or driver inside the controller is likely stuck, which is an internal electronic failure and the repair below.

Then the module. If the battery, grounds, supply and sensors check out and the codes are C2116, C2200 or a persistent U0121 with power present, the controller is the suspect.

"The Rams that come across the bench have a story: the three lights, a dealer quote for the whole hydraulic assembly, and a trailer that cannot be pulled until it is fixed. Nine times out of ten the hydraulics are fine and it is a driver stage or the pin field. Repair the electronics, keep the coding, and the truck is back to work for a fraction of the assembly price." — Independent chassis-electronics technician, 17+ years on ABS and stability controllers (anonymized)

Repair your controller or replace the assembly: the real cost

The dealer answer to a failed Ram ABS controller is a complete new hydraulic-and-electronic assembly, plus labour to fit it, programming to configure it to the truck and a scan-tool-assisted bleed. That is the right answer when the hydraulic unit has genuinely failed. It is the expensive answer when the fault is a driver stage or a cracked joint on a controller bolted to a perfectly good block.

Route What it addresses Programming Bleed Cost
Dealer new assembly Everything, including hydraulics that never failed Yes, dealer-performed Yes Commonly well into four figures on a Ram once the part, labour, programming and bleed are counted, based on the parts and labour picture reported by outlets such as Kelley Blue Book
Remanufactured exchange A rebuilt assembly for your core Usually yes Usually yes Moderate, plus a core deposit and days of downtime
Used donor unit Cheapest part, unknown health Almost always yes Yes Often the most expensive outcome once programming and a second failure are counted
Board-level repair of your own controller The electronic fault on the unit you own No; your coding never left the truck Often not, if the block stayed on the truck $499 flat plus return shipping from $29.95; 1-year warranty; about a week on the bench, rush 2 to 3 business days available
Bench evaluation Nobody has proven which side failed n/a n/a $150 per hour, applied before any repair is quoted

The row that changes the arithmetic is the repair. Because your original controller keeps the truck's configuration, there is nothing to program when it goes back in, and if only the electronic side came off, there is often nothing to bleed. The ABS module repair cost guide works through the same comparison across all makes.

What we repair on a Ram controller

On the electro-hydraulic units these trucks carry, TRW or ATE, the electronic controller is a circuit board carrying the pump-motor and solenoid driver stages, a soldered pin field into the hydraulic block and the memory holding the unit's configuration, the same construction Bosch describes for its integrated units. The failures we repair are the pump-motor driver and supply circuit behind C2116, the solenoid driver stages that drop ABS and stability, fatigued solder at the pin field from years of heat and vibration, and the corrupted memory or communication fault behind U0121 and C2200. The repaired unit goes through a powered test cycle, including thermal cycling, before it ships, which is why the standard bench time is about a week.

What we do not do is invent a repair. If the pump motor itself or the valve block has failed mechanically, we tell you, because that is a replacement, not a bench fix, and you are not charged for a repair that was not performed.

What to send, and how it runs

Ship the electronic controller, or the complete unit if yours does not separate, in a padded box with the lines capped and the connector protected. Include the VIN, the year and model, the full code list from the ABS controller, a photo of the label, and a note on whether the pump runs after key-off or the battery has been going flat. Choose a return shipping tier at checkout; if the truck is a working truck, the rush option moves the bench time to 2 to 3 business days. We text updates to the number on the order, and the repaired controller goes back with the work documented and its coding untouched.

Frequently asked questions

Why are the ABS, ESP/BAS and traction lights all on at once on my Ram? Because on a Ram those three functions run on one controller. An internal electronic fault in the ABS module takes anti-lock, stability, brake assist and traction control down together while the hydraulic brakes keep working normally. A single wheel-speed sensor fault usually names a corner instead.

Which ABS module does my Ram have? It depends on the generation, and the label on the electronic controller is the only reliable answer. Rebuilders list a TRW EBC-440 on the 2006 to 2012 Ram 1500 and on the heavy-duty trucks through 2018, and the 2014 and 2015 Ram 1500s that reached our bench carried ATE units; the older trucks and the 2019 and newer trucks carry other families. Send a photo of the label with your VIN and we identify it before you remove anything.

What does C2116 mean on a Ram? C2116 is a pump-motor supply voltage fault, and on these trucks the pump-motor driver and supply circuit live inside the electronic controller, so it usually points at the module. Occasionally the pump motor itself is mechanically bad, which is a replacement rather than an electronics repair; the bench test separates the two before anyone commits.

Does a repaired Ram ABS module need programming? No. The repaired unit is your own original, so its configuration never changed and it goes back in configured. Programming is only required when a different unit is fitted, which is one of the main costs a repair avoids.

Can I tow with the ABS module dead? You should not. Anti-lock, stability control and brake assist are off, and on trucks with an integrated trailer brake controller that function is often disabled or faulted alongside the lights. Get the controller repaired before the next load.

How much does a Ram ABS module repair cost? A board-level repair of your own controller is $499 flat plus return shipping chosen at checkout from $29.95, with a 1-year warranty on the repair, about a week on the bench and a rush option for 2 to 3 business days. A dealer assembly with programming and a bleed commonly runs well into four figures.

Will a used ABS module from a salvage yard work on my Ram? Not as delivered on the fourth- and fifth-generation trucks. The used unit carries the donor truck's configuration and has to be programmed to yours, and the heavy-duty part numbers do not interchange with the 1500. You are also buying unknown electronic health, which is why the cheapest part often becomes the most expensive route.

The bottom line

Three lights at once on a Ram pickup is the signature of a failed ABS controller, and which controller you have depends on the generation: TRW and ATE electro-hydraulic units across the 2009 to 2018 Ram 1500 and the heavy-duty trucks of that era, other families before and after, all identified from the label rather than the model year. Read the ABS controller's own codes, prove the battery, grounds, supply and wheel-speed sensors, and then repair the controller you own for $499 with its coding intact instead of buying and programming a whole hydraulic assembly. On a truck that tows, that is not a convenience repair; it is the difference between a truck that works and one that sits.
