The three routes
Every ECM replacement resolves to one of three routes. They are not interchangeable, and the sticker price of the part is the least interesting number in each of them.
Route A — new module from the dealer, programmed by the dealer

The honest range in 2026: call it $900 to $2,200 all-in on a mainstream domestic truck, SUV, or car. On a late-model European platform with a locked controller and a security-gated programming session, four figures is the floor, not the ceiling.
New-vehicle economics are part of why this hurts. What you pay for: the reman unit itself, usually a core charge you get back only if your original is rebuildable and returned in time, return shipping in both directions, and in many cases still a programming step at a shop.
Where it wins: platforms with a well-understood, high-volume failure mode. If ten thousand of your exact controller have failed the same way, somebody has industrialized the fix and it is genuinely good value.
Where it stings: the core charge and the turnaround. If your original module is physically destroyed — water-damaged, burned, connector melted — you may forfeit the core credit entirely, which quietly adds one to three hundred dollars to the real price. And the "reman" label is not regulated; quality between suppliers is wide.

The brand wrinkles that actually change the answer
Generic advice fails here because the security architecture differs by manufacturer and by model year within a manufacturer. These are the four that decide most cases.
GM — SPS2, Global A, and Global B
General Motors moved module programming to a web-delivered subscription platform, and the practical dividing line is architecture. Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram — SKIM and the secured-gateway era
Stellantis platforms pair the powertrain controller with the Sentry Key Immobilizer Module, and the controller stores a secret it must share with SKIM before the engine will run. When the dealer is the right answer
We would rather tell you this up front than take an order we should not.
- The vehicle is under a factory or extended warranty. Have them do it. Aftermarket module work on a covered vehicle is a bad trade even when it is cheaper.
- The module is theft-relevant on a late model. Immobilizer-adjacent controllers on recent platforms are deliberately restricted, and the legitimate path runs through manufacturer channels with documented proof of ownership.
