2007–2018 Sprinter Van: what we see on the bench

From our bench

As of October 16, 2026, a 2008 Dodge Sprinter ABS module is on our rush bench. It was ordered on October 9 with rush repair and UPS overnight return, arrived on October 14 in a box that had been damaged in transit (we photographed it on arrival), and has an expected ship-back date of October 19. The job is still in progress, so there is no result to report yet.

How common it is

On this van the common failure behind the lights is the rear wheel-speed sensor. NHTSA's investigation counted 6,710 rear-sensor failures on 2012–2018 Sprinters upfitted as campers, 81 percent of all Sprinter rear-sensor reports, and traced about 99 percent of them to moisture on the 5-ton 3500. NHTSA investigation PE 20-014

At launch the NCV3's Adaptive ESP was Bosch ESP version 8.1. Service part numbers change by year and badge: Mopar 68026562AA or 68050062AA (both now 68050601AA) for 2007–2009 Dodge Sprinter 2500s, 68026567AA (now 68050602AA) for 2007–2009 3500s, Mercedes 000-900-86-01 (control module) and 007-431-39-12 (hydraulic unit) for 2010–2013 2500s, and 906-900-14-03 for 2014–2018 2500s and 3500s. Freightliner vans are the same NCV3 platform, so read the label on your own unit before ordering anything.

The 2007–2018 Sprinter Van ABS codes, and what they usually mean

Seeing one of these on your scan tool? Here's what it usually points to on this vehicle.

C0037

Left rear wheel-speed sensor

The sensor or its harness at that wheel, the moisture-prone part on 5-ton vans; not the module

C003A

Right rear wheel-speed sensor

The same, right side; not the module

C0031 / C0034

Left front / right front wheel-speed sensor

A front sensor, its wiring, or a damaged tone ring or bearing; not the module

U0121

Lost communication with the ABS module

Power, ground or network wiring to the unit, or a dead control unit; prove power and ground at its connector first

Internal fault

The ESP control unit failed its own self-check (read with a Mercedes-capable tool)

The module itself, with four healthy wheel speeds in live data

Will This Fix My Problem?

Honest answer: here's exactly what this service fixes — and what it doesn't.

Fixes:

  • ABS, ESP and BAS lights on together, often with a "visit workshop" message
  • Cruise control stops working along with the lights
  • Limp mode: the van stops answering the throttle normally
  • Erratic shifting, with the transmission hunting between gears
  • No communication with the ESP unit (U0121), or an internal fault that returns after clearing

Won't fix:

  • Wheel speed sensor failures (sensor replacement is on-car work)
  • Hydraulic pump or valve body mechanical failure (we repair electronics, not pump motors)
  • Brake line / fluid issues

Before you order

  • You diagnose, we service the module.

We don't have your car and we don't diagnose it. Order once you or your mechanic have confirmed this module is the cause. If the work is completed and the car still has the same symptom because of another fault, the work is still done — a bench re-test under warranty is free.

  • A clone copies what is in your module.

We transfer the data as we read it. If another shop or tool already worked on the module — an unfinished clone, a tune, a delete — that data can come across too. Tell us before you ship.

  • What "plug-and-play" means.

No dealer programming should be needed when your original data is intact, the donor matches your module (same type, hardware and software family) and the rest of the car works. It isn't a promise that the car will start or run.

Shipping Instructions

These details are also emailed to you the moment your payment clears.

What to include in your box

  • Ship the electronic control module, not the hydraulic block, unless we ask for the whole unit. If you're not sure which part comes off, text us a photo of the unit and its label first.
  • Put your VIN and the part number from the unit label in the box. Use a rigid box with padding on every side and the connector protected.
  • Disconnect the battery first. If only the electronic module comes off, the brake lines stay connected and no bleed is needed. If the whole unit comes out, cap the lines and ports, and bleed the brakes properly after it goes back in, scan-tool assisted if air may have reached the hydraulic unit.
  • We email you a prepaid label to send it in. Pick standard, 2-day or overnight return at checkout.

2007–2018 Sprinter Van FAQ

Vehicle-specific answers.

Why are the ABS, ESP and BAS lights all on at once on my Sprinter?
One control unit runs anti-lock, stability control, brake assist and traction control from the same four wheel-speed signals. When a signal stops making sense, or the unit fails, it shuts them all off together; per NHTSA's investigation it also stops accepting throttle requests and cancels cruise control, which is the limp mode owners describe. On this van the rear wheel-speed sensors are the first suspect, so read the codes before buying anything.
How much does a Sprinter ABS/ESP module repair cost?
$499 flat to repair your own module, plus return shipping from $29.95. If testing shows the processor or board is beyond repair, a replacement board with data transfer and programming is $1,050 in total, with what you paid credited, and we only order it after you approve. For comparison, Mercedes-Benz USA lists the 2010–2013 Sprinter 2500 control module at $3,500 and the 2014–2018 module at $845, and Mopar lists the 2007–2009 Dodge Sprinter 2500 module at $4,890.
Will the module need programming after the repair?
In most cases, no. We repair the unit that came out of your van, so it keeps its own coding and goes back in plug-and-play. A new or used unit is different: it has to be coded to your van with Mercedes' factory software, which can include SCN coding, before the lights go out.
Is there a recall on the Sprinter ABS or ESP system?
Recall 21V-042 covers 48,667 Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner Sprinter 3500s built from 2012 to 2018 and upfitted as campers or RVs: the dealer replaces the rear wheel-speed sensors free. By the July 2024 annual report, 40,918 had been remedied. Cargo vans, passenger vans and 2500s are outside it, so check your own VIN on NHTSA's recall lookup.
How long does the repair take?
About a week on the bench (2–3 business days with rush repair) at our Arlington TX workshop, plus shipping each way. Round-trip from anywhere in the US: typically about two weeks. If your module needs the replacement board, we tell you the timing when we quote it.
What exactly do I ship?
The electronic control module from the ESP/ABS unit, with your VIN and the part number from its label. Don't send the hydraulic block unless we ask for it; if you're not sure which part comes off, text us a photo first. We email a prepaid label, so sending it to us costs nothing.
