2003–2006 cars use Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC), covered by Mercedes for 25 years at the dealer; the 2007–2009 facelift went back to a conventional ABS/ESP unit

2003–2009 Mercedes-Benz E-Class W211: what we see on the bench

From our bench

None of our ABS orders so far has been a W211 E-Class (our order records start in June 2026). For the SBC years we send owners to the dealer under the warranty extension rather than to our bench; for a 2007–2009 car, text us a photo of the unit and its label before you order and we confirm what to send.

How common it is

The two halves of this generation look nothing alike in NHTSA's complaint data: 81 of the 483 complaints about the 2004 E-Class and 101 of the 532 about the 2005 are filed under service brakes, while 1 of the 226 about the 2008 describes a failed ABS control unit (our count). NHTSA complaint data: 2004 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

The 2003–2006 SBC unit is an electro-hydraulic brake-by-wire unit with a pump, a high-pressure reservoir and a control unit bolted to it. Mercedes sells remanufactured SBC units for 2005–2006 cars, such as 009-431-27-12-83 (hydraulic unit with control module, list $1,908), but under the warranty extension the dealer replaces covered SBC parts at no charge. The 2007–2009 conventional unit has its own part numbers, so read the label on your own unit before ordering anything.

The 2003–2009 Mercedes-Benz E-Class W211 ABS codes, and what they usually mean

Seeing one of these on your scan tool? Here's what it usually points to on this vehicle.

C249F

Check service life of the SBC hydraulic unit (A7/3)

SBC cars only (2003–2006): the service-life counter has flagged the unit, with a white "Service Brake – Service Required" message. Covered by the 25-year extension at a dealer

C2498

Operating time of the SBC hydraulic unit exceeded

SBC cars only, the same counter family. A Mercedes bulletin warns that older diagnostic software could report OK with this code still stored, so an old-tool pass is not proof

C26DE / C26BB

Hydraulic fault: malfunction in pressure supply

SBC cars only: the pump or reservoir cannot build or hold pressure. The dealer replaces the unit under the extension; it is not a module repair

C14BE

Test control module A7/3n1 (stored in the ESP module)

SBC cars only: the ESP module is reporting the SBC control unit itself as faulty

Hydraulic back-up mode

SBC drops to unassisted hydraulic braking

On 2003–2005 SBC cars, recall 2005110001 replaces a loosening ground wire at the SBC pump free; the dealer has to close it before replacing an SBC unit under warranty

Will This Fix My Problem?

Honest answer: here's exactly what this service fixes — and what it doesn't.

Fixes:

  • ABS, ESP and cruise control switched off together on a 2007–2009 car, with warning messages in the cluster
  • ABS not working on a 2007–2009 car, so the wheels can lock under hard braking
  • An ABS module fault on a 2007–2009 car that comes straight back after it is cleared

Won't fix:

  • Wheel speed sensor failures (sensor replacement is on-car work)
  • Hydraulic pump or valve body mechanical failure (we repair electronics, not pump motors)
  • Brake line / fluid issues

Before you order

  • You diagnose, we service the module.

We don't have your car and we don't diagnose it. Order once you or your mechanic have confirmed this module is the cause. If the work is completed and the car still has the same symptom because of another fault, the work is still done — a bench re-test under warranty is free.

  • A clone copies what is in your module.

We transfer the data as we read it. If another shop or tool already worked on the module — an unfinished clone, a tune, a delete — that data can come across too. Tell us before you ship.

  • What "plug-and-play" means.

No dealer programming should be needed when your original data is intact, the donor matches your module (same type, hardware and software family) and the rest of the car works. It isn't a promise that the car will start or run.

Shipping Instructions

These details are also emailed to you the moment your payment clears.

What to include in your box

  • Check the model year first. On a 2003–2006 SBC car, have a Mercedes-Benz dealer check the warranty extension by VIN before you remove anything; the dealer also closes recall 2005110001 (the SBC ground wire) if it is still open.
  • SBC holds brake fluid at high pressure and has to be switched off with a diagnostic tool before any line is opened. A "Brake defective, stop vehicle" message means stop and arrange a tow.
  • On a 2007–2009 car, text us a photo of the unit and its label first, and we tell you whether to send the control module alone or the complete unit.
  • Don't clear the codes before they are read: the codes and the color of the dash message tell a service-life counter from a pressure-supply fault.
  • We email you a prepaid label to send it in. Pick standard, 2-day or overnight return at checkout.

2003–2009 Mercedes-Benz E-Class W211 FAQ

Vehicle-specific answers.

Does Mercedes still cover the SBC brake on my E-Class?
For 2003–2006 E-Class cars, yes. In August 2018 Mercedes-Benz USA extended the warranty on the SBC hydraulic unit from 4 years or 50,000 miles to 25 years with no mileage limit, covering the SBC control unit, the pressure reservoir, the wheel-speed sensors and several other related parts. A dealer checks eligibility by VIN, and the extension also allows reimbursement of earlier paid repairs with documentation.
Which E-Class years have SBC?
The 2003–2006 model years: the E320, E320 CDI, E500, E55 AMG and the 2006 E350. The 2007 facelift dropped SBC for a conventional ABS/ESP unit, so 2007–2009 cars (E350, E550, E63 AMG and E320 BlueTEC) are outside the SBC extension.
How much does a 2007–2009 E-Class ABS module repair cost?
$499 flat to repair your own module, plus return shipping from $29.95. If testing shows the processor or board is beyond repair, a replacement board with data transfer and programming is $1,050 in total, with what you paid credited, and we only order it after you approve. For comparison, RepairPal estimates $3,448 to $3,493 for a dealer replacement on a 2008 E350.
Will the module need coding after the repair?
In most cases, no. We repair the module that came out of your car, so it keeps its coding and goes back in plug-and-play. A new or used unit has to be coded to your car first.
How long does the repair take?
About a week on the bench (2–3 business days with rush repair) at our Arlington TX workshop, plus shipping each way. Round-trip from anywhere in the US: typically about two weeks. If your module needs the replacement board, we tell you the timing when we quote it.
Can I just reset the SBC counter?
We don't recommend it. Resetting the counter with a diagnostic tool clears the warning without fixing the unit, and on a 2003–2006 car the dealer replacement is covered under the warranty extension anyway.
What exactly do I ship?
For a 2007–2009 car, text us photos of the unit and its label first, and we tell you whether to send the control module or the complete unit; include your VIN and the label number. We email a prepaid label, so sending it to us costs nothing. For a 2003–2006 SBC car, start at the dealer instead.
