First-generation XC90; Volvo's diagnostics call the ABS controller the brake control module (BCM), and it unbolts from under the pump

2003–2014 Volvo XC90: what we see on the bench

From our bench

Our one Volvo ABS order so far is a 2013 S60 placed in October 2026, a newer platform than this XC90, and it has not reached the bench yet. For an XC90, text us a photo of your module's label and your codes before you order.

How common it is

NHTSA's complaint file is a poor guide here: 30 of the 462 complaints about the 2004 XC90 use ABS or anti-skid wording, but most describe a whole-car electrical shutdown, and only 1 names the ABS/DSTC control module (our count). NHTSA complaint data: 2004 Volvo XC90

Volvo's diagnostics call this controller the brake control module (BCM) and read its codes as BCM-xxxx. It sits under the ABS pump on the left side of the engine bay and can be removed with the pump left in place. A replacement module has to match your car's equipment, so repairing your own avoids that question; read the label before ordering anything.

The 2003–2014 Volvo XC90 ABS codes, and what they usually mean

Seeing one of these on your scan tool? Here's what it usually points to on this vehicle.

ABS-0080

Control module faulty signal

An internal fault in the module itself

ABS-0115

Communication between control modules

The module has stopped talking on the network: the module first, then the wiring and the central module

CEM-1A5F / ECM-A02B

Communication with the ABS module: signal missing or faulty

Logged by the central and engine modules when the ABS module goes silent; it points at the ABS module or its power, not at them

ABS-0070

Pump motor faulty signal

The module's pump driver or the pump motor itself; we repair the electronics, so text us this code before you ship

BCM-0022

Wheel sensor, right front, mechanical error

Not the module: the wheel-speed sensor, its wiring or a cracked or dirty reluctor ring at that corner

Will This Fix My Problem?

Honest answer: here's exactly what this service fixes — and what it doesn't.

Fixes:

  • "ABS service required" or "anti-skid service required" with the ABS light on
  • Anti-skid (DSTC) and traction control switched off
  • The speedometer and odometer dropping out, with cruise control quitting
  • Messages that come and go at first and clear after a restart
  • Other modules logging lost communication with the ABS module (CEM-1A5F or ECM-A02B)

Won't fix:

  • Wheel speed sensor failures (sensor replacement is on-car work)
  • Hydraulic pump or valve body mechanical failure (we repair electronics, not pump motors)
  • Brake line / fluid issues

Before you order

  • You diagnose, we service the module.

We don't have your car and we don't diagnose it. Order once you or your mechanic have confirmed this module is the cause. If the work is completed and the car still has the same symptom because of another fault, the work is still done — a bench re-test under warranty is free.

  • A clone copies what is in your module.

We transfer the data as we read it. If another shop or tool already worked on the module — an unfinished clone, a tune, a delete — that data can come across too. Tell us before you ship.

  • What "plug-and-play" means.

No dealer programming should be needed when your original data is intact, the donor matches your module (same type, hardware and software family) and the rest of the car works. It isn't a promise that the car will start or run.

Shipping Instructions

These details are also emailed to you the moment your payment clears.

What to include in your box

  • Ship the electronic control module, not the pump, unless we ask for the whole unit: the module unbolts from under the pump on the left side of the engine bay, and the pump stays in place. If you're not sure, text us a photo first.
  • A pump-motor code (ABS-0070) changes the plan: text us the codes first, because a worn pump motor is not something a module repair fixes.
  • Before you pull anything, check the battery and charging voltage, the wheel-speed sensors and the brake-light switch; on AWD cars, mismatched tire sizes can upset the system too.
  • Disconnect the battery before unplugging the module, and put your VIN, the codes and the number from the label in the box. With the pump left in place no brake line is opened, so no bleed is needed.
  • We email you a prepaid label to send it in. Pick standard, 2-day or overnight return at checkout.

2003–2014 Volvo XC90 FAQ

Vehicle-specific answers.

Why does my XC90 say "anti-skid service required"?
The ABS module runs anti-lock braking and the anti-skid (DSTC) system, and it also feeds the speedometer, so when it starts to fail the messages come on, the speedometer can drop out and cruise control quits, usually intermittently at first. Low battery voltage, a wheel-speed sensor or the brake-light switch can set the same messages, so check those and read the codes first.
How much does an XC90 ABS module repair cost?
$499 flat to repair your own module, plus return shipping from $29.95. If testing shows the processor or board is beyond repair, a replacement board with data transfer and programming is $1,050 in total, with what you paid credited, and we only order it after you approve. For comparison, RepairPal estimates $1,263 to $1,337 for a dealer replacement on a 2004, $2,477 to $2,551 on a 2005 and $1,713 to $1,787 on a 2008.
Will the module need coding after the repair?
In most cases, no. We repair the module that came out of your XC90, so it keeps its configuration and goes back in plug-and-play. A replacement has to match your car's equipment.
Is the 2004 XC90's ABS light always the module?
No. Many 2004 XC90 complaints to NHTSA describe the whole dash dying, the wipers starting on their own and a "brake failure" message together, which is an electrical fault elsewhere in the car rather than the ABS module. If your lights come with those, have the electrical system checked first.
How long does the repair take?
About a week on the bench (2–3 business days with rush repair) at our Arlington TX workshop, plus shipping each way. Round-trip from anywhere in the US: typically about two weeks. If your module needs the replacement board, we tell you the timing when we quote it.
Is there a recall on the XC90 ABS module?
Not that we found. NHTSA's recalls for the 2003–2011 XC90 cover tie rods, wipers, the fuel pump, seat belts and other parts, but none the ABS or brake control module, and we found no Volvo warranty extension for it. Check your own VIN on NHTSA's recall lookup to be sure.
What exactly do I ship?
The electronic control module, with your VIN, the codes and the number from its label. Don't send the pump unless we ask for it; if you're not sure which part comes off, text us a photo first. We email a prepaid label, so sending it to us costs nothing.
