2005–2010 Volkswagen Jetta Mk5: what we see on the bench

From our bench

Our one Volkswagen ABS order so far was a 2015 Jetta from August 2026, a later generation than this page covers. For a Mk5, text us a photo of the unit and its label before you order and we confirm which unit you have and what to send.

How common it is

The failure clusters in the 2009–2010 cars: in NHTSA's complaint data, 125 of the 905 complaints about the 2009 Jetta and 25 of the 875 about the 2010 describe the ABS module, pump or unit, against 0 or 1 a year for 2006–2008 (our count). NHTSA complaint data: 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

The 2009–2010 cars carry the ABS unit named in recall 16V-913, which also covers the 2009 Jetta SportWagen, GTI, Rabbit, Eos and Audi A3 and the 2010 Golf; the 2005–2008 cars are not in it. Volkswagen sells the hydraulic unit and its control module as one part, numbered by equipment (stability control or not, engine and options), so read the label on your own unit before ordering anything.

The 2005–2010 Volkswagen Jetta Mk5 ABS codes, and what they usually mean

Seeing one of these on your scan tool? Here's what it usually points to on this vehicle.

01130

ABS operation: implausible signal

Ross-Tech lists fuses, wiring to the ABS control module (J104) and the module itself as causes; with the fuses and wiring good, it points at the module. It clears only after a drive above 13 mph

01276

ABS hydraulic pump (V64): signal outside specifications or electrical fault

The pump is driven from the module, so this code comes with module failures as well as a seized pump; check the fuses on top of the battery first

Wheel-speed sensor (one corner)

Sensor, tone ring or wiring at one wheel

One corner: test that sensor and its wiring first. Several corners at once, or sensor codes with no communication, point at the module

No communication

Scan tool cannot reach the ABS module

Fuses, power and ground first; with those good, the module

Will This Fix My Problem?

Honest answer: here's exactly what this service fixes — and what it doesn't.

Fixes:

  • ABS, ESC (traction) and red BRAKE lights on together, with three warning beeps
  • The BRAKE light flashing while driving
  • A scan tool that cannot talk to the ABS module
  • ABS and ESC lights coming and going before they stay on
  • Code 01130 stored with the fuses and wiring checked

Won't fix:

  • Wheel speed sensor failures (sensor replacement is on-car work)
  • Hydraulic pump or valve body mechanical failure (we repair electronics, not pump motors)
  • Brake line / fluid issues

Before you order

  • You diagnose, we service the module.

We don't have your car and we don't diagnose it. Order once you or your mechanic have confirmed this module is the cause. If the work is completed and the car still has the same symptom because of another fault, the work is still done — a bench re-test under warranty is free.

  • A clone copies what is in your module.

We transfer the data as we read it. If another shop or tool already worked on the module — an unfinished clone, a tune, a delete — that data can come across too. Tell us before you ship.

  • What "plug-and-play" means.

No dealer programming should be needed when your original data is intact, the donor matches your module (same type, hardware and software family) and the rest of the car works. It isn't a promise that the car will start or run.

Shipping Instructions

These details are also emailed to you the moment your payment clears.

What to include in your box

  • On a 2009–2010 car, ask a Volkswagen dealer to check recall 16V-913 and the warranty extension by VIN before you remove anything.
  • Ship the electronic control module, not the hydraulic block, unless we ask for the whole unit. If you're not sure which part comes off on your car, text us a photo of the unit and its label first.
  • Before you pull anything, check the ABS fuses, including the fuse panel on top of the battery, and the wheel-speed sensors.
  • Put your VIN, the codes and the part number from the label in the box. Taking only the control module off leaves the brake lines closed, so no bleed is needed; if the whole unit comes out, bleed the brakes after it goes back in.
  • We email you a prepaid label to send it in. Pick standard, 2-day or overnight return at checkout.

2005–2010 Volkswagen Jetta Mk5 FAQ

Vehicle-specific answers.

Is there a recall on the Jetta ABS module?
Yes, for 2009–2010 cars. Recall 16V-913 (Volkswagen 45F2) covers the 2009–2010 Jetta sedan, the 2009 SportWagen, GTI, Rabbit, Eos and Audi A3, and the 2010 Golf: the ABS control unit can fail during an ABS or stability-control stop, so the dealer updates its software free and replaces any module that fails the new test. After the recall, Volkswagen bulletin VWP-17-03 extends coverage of the module when specific fault codes are present. 2005–2008 cars are not in the recall. Check your VIN on NHTSA's recall lookup.
Why are the ABS, ESC and brake lights all on at once on my Jetta?
The ABS module runs anti-lock braking and stability control, so when it fails or loses power they switch off together and the warning lights come on with three beeps. A blown fuse, a bad ground or one failed wheel-speed sensor can do the same, so read the codes: 01130 with good fuses and wiring points at the module.
How much does a Jetta ABS module repair cost?
$499 flat to repair your own module, plus return shipping from $29.95. If testing shows the processor or board is beyond repair, a replacement board with data transfer and programming is $1,050 in total, with what you paid credited, and we only order it after you approve. For comparison, RepairPal estimates $1,718 to $1,874 for a dealer replacement on a Jetta. On a 2009–2010 car the dealer route can cost nothing if the recall or the warranty extension applies, so check that first.
Will the module need coding after the repair?
In most cases, no. We repair the module that came out of your Jetta, so it keeps its own coding and goes back in plug-and-play. A replacement module has to be coded to the car before the lights go out.
How long does the repair take?
About a week on the bench (2–3 business days with rush repair) at our Arlington TX workshop, plus shipping each way. Round-trip from anywhere in the US: typically about two weeks. If your module needs the replacement board, we tell you the timing when we quote it.
What exactly do I ship?
The electronic control module from the ABS unit, with your VIN, the codes and the part number from its label. Don't send the hydraulic block unless we ask for it; if you're not sure which part comes off, text us a photo first. We email a prepaid label, so sending it to us costs nothing.
